After the combo update installs and restarts itself a few times, which DellEFI tools do I use? 1.1 or 1.2a5?

Is all that I need to do on a fresh install the following:

1) Install 10.5.0
2) Upgrade to 10.5.7 with combo updater
3) Install DellEFI tools (1.1 or 1.2a5)
4) About this Mac.pkg

And that's it?

Thank you to everyone for all their hard work. It's because of this forum that all of this is possible.
I am wondering the same thing. I just got everything to do an install and just want to make sure I am doing everything right...

Unhappy Update to 10.5.7 on Dell Mini 9 successful, but screen is all snowy - 05-13-2009, 04:00 PM

I just did the combo update of 10.5.7, and it went through fine. However, when I rebooted, the screen is mostly snowy. I log in, the screen remains snowy, and there is little I can do. I am able to move the mouse, but none of the screen is viewable. Is there any way to fix this or go back, or do I need to start from scratch?

Default Osx - 05-13-2009, 04:13 PM

I think a lot of people are having problems with this update... I was searching around the Mac sites for people who are actually running Macs, not Dells and they are having a crap load of problems also.
I think its another Apple screw up that they will have to fix... plus Im never the first one to do an update... I like to see who screws their computers or whatever up first. Especially since iTunes and the iPhone had problems with updates for the software and firmware.

Unhappy In safe mode, it works! - 05-13-2009, 04:17 PM

So I booted in safe mood, and the screen works beautifully. Is there anything I can do here to get it work in normal mode?

Thank you.

A bit more details to Conq's method for people having problems with blank/blue/garbled screen after updating to 10.5.7:

1) I had installed OSX 10.5.6 + DellEFI1.1 using a retail 10.5.6 DVD purchased from Apple. Installer ran fine, and updater ran fine, but screen was garbled after reboot into 10.5.7 update, and continued to remain that way after using conq's steps to resolve.

2) Turns out the DellEFI1.1 was the problem, or at least the version I had. I downloaded DellEFI1.2a4.zip from DellEFI1.2a4.zip - mydellmini - DellEFI 1.2 alpha 4 - Google Code, copied it to a USB thumb drive.

3) Booted in safe mode using -x. This step is apparently confusing to some people. If you see a message text "<several lines of boot text and copyright notices> Boot:" when you reboot your Dell, then just type "-x" without quotes and hit enter. It is case insensitive, so either "-x" or "-X" should work. Both versions worked fine on mine. If you don't see the text message, then you have graphical booting enabled. In that case, just hit any key when you see the moving graphical progress bar during boot, then type "-x" at the "boot: " prompt, then hit Enter.

4) Inserted said USB drive, unzipped DellEFI1.2a4.zip in Finder, then ran DellEFI application. Updated the bootloader and recreated the dsdt.aml file in DellEFI. This sounds a lot harder than it is - just enable the checkboxes to install bootloader and remove dsdt.aml in DellEFI's fool proof dialog box and click on Install. No need to know where and how the bootloader is stored, or sweat about dsdt.aml locations. No need to know what this file does either.

Note: You have to remove the dsdt.aml file from any DellEFI version you have (by checking the box to remove dsdt.aml in DellEFI), and reboot in safe mode before starting step 4..

5) Rebooted in normal mode (just reboot normally without "-x"), and my Mini (2GB/BT/1.3MP/64GBSSD) is up and running 10.5.7 now. I just installed iLife 09 and ran software update again successfully without having to repeat above steps.

Hope that helps. Please email me if you need more details.

Cheers.

Can someone update the first post to include the Conq's instructions (instead of just a link)? I think the instructions should be elaborated on too. Sorry if some of the questions below are noobish, but I think some clarification would be very helpful to allot of people.

Conq's instructions (with suggestions for clarity):

Here's what you need to do:

1) Download the installer, don't use Software Update. (Add link to the combo and/or delta 10.5.7 installer download)
2) Run the 10.5.7 installer
3) Let it reboot
4) At the boot screen (detail how to get into the boot screen) type "-x" (without the quotes) and press Enter to laod the OS in Safe Mode.
5) Once in Safe Mode, run the DellEFI (link to download and detail the confirmed working versions 1.1, etc.)
6) Reinstall the Mini 9 Extensions and remove custom dsdt.aml file. (How do you do this? Where is the dsdt.aml file that needs to be deleted?)
7) Reboot
8) At the boot screen type "-x" and press Enter to load the OS in Safe Mode
9) Once in Safe Mode, run the DellEFI again (default settings?)
10) Install the custom dsdt.aml file (is this an option in the DellEFI? If not, where is this file located, and where do you install it to?)
11) Reboot.

Ice2257 I'm in the same boat as you. I can no longer boot the system normally or into safe mode with out getting the dreaded blue screen. Was initially using an older version of DellEFI and kept getting the garbled screen then switched to DellEFI 1.1 and now I get the blue screen of death. Anyone have any ideas? Otherwise I'm going to have to reinstall from scratch or God forbid try Windows 7.
