Default Repairing Disk Permissions... Does it ever finish? - 05-10-2009, 08:39 AM

Hi, I'm glad to be using a new Mini with OS X. When I run Disk Utility and have it repair disk permissions (Something I do all the time on my MacBook Pro etc) rather than take the normal 5 minutes it takes like 10 minutes just to read the disk permission database then tells me it will take 25 minutes to repair disk permissions. (This is with a RunCore 32Gig SSD)

When I tried it, I got impatient and was downloading software updates at the same time and Disk Utility eventually just sort of stopped in it's tracks.

Does anyone know why it takes so long and is there any reason not to repair disk permissions?

Thanks!

Dell Mini 9 2Gigs Ram, 64 Gig RunCore, (32G would have probably been enough) .3M Webcam, OS X 10.5.8. NetBookMaker, Amazingly able to run Ivory Grand Piano Virtual Instrument!

It is good to repair disc permissions occasionally. They can take a while to do but often the time estimate changes and quickly lowers. Either way, let it do it's thing.

I finally let it run it's course, it seemed to take about 30 minutes which is strange considering that the RunCore 32 boots faster than my MacBook Pro's 7200 rpm drive.

So disk permissions repair won't mess up any of the custom settings installed as a result of Hackintoshing? I had so many (seemed like hundreds) that I was afraid to correct them, thinking that it would hose the custom boot settings, etc. No bad results from repairing permissions?

If it does no harm, then I'll go ahead - just don't want to ruin this sweet-running thang. If they need repair, how come it runs so sweet? I've had Ubuntu and XP on this thing previously, and neither of them performed like this!

Repair permissions takes quite awhile, even on my real Macs. I will say though that it does seem to take even longer on my Hackintoshes (Dell D830 Laptop in addition to the mini9)
