Default Mini 9 identity to other macs - 05-09-2009, 02:29 PM

Hi all,

Was just having a bit of a random thought whilst sat on my other mac, a mac mini. Wouldn't it be cool if we could have the mini 9's identify themselves as some kind of laptop rather than a generic mac which I presume is the case atm. What I'm getting at is in the Finder sidebar it'd be nice to see the dell mini 9 from another mac as a laptop of some kind.

Anyone else had this thought or know if its possible to spoof the mini so others macs believe it to be something else?

Dan

Someone else recently asked this question too. I am not a 100% sure how you would do this. I have done a little snooping around on my systems and it seems that in the sharing OS X sends the system info which will effect which icon is selected.

If you look in System Profiler you will see that the second line is Model Identifier. I believe this is what's sent. You would need to figure out how to change this.

Dell Mini 9, Alpine white, OS X 10.5.7, 32 GB RunCore, 2 GB Crucial RAM... 100% awesome!

I'm very happily a geek and also it just looks a little wrong that it shows up as a generic mac from my other macs, I'm thinking any mac laptop would look better and make more sense, non?

I too would like to see "this kind of stuff." :geek:

This Engadget article tells you where OSX pulls the sidebar 'Shared' icons from:
Code:
/System/Library/CoreServices/CoreTypes.bundle/Contents/Resources/
There are icons for most modern Macs: [attachment=0:zlwrrmna]coretypes-icons.gif[/attachment:zlwrrmna]
- Can we figure out which string one Mac uses to identify another Mac?
- Is it in the same place that the AboutThisMac.pkg writes to?
- Can a Mac/Mini9 send a custom icon?
- Can we modify a plist/kext to make the Mini9 report that it's a Black Macbook or an XServe?

My assumption is it's the same info as in the System Profiler. I am not sure where that info is stored though.

About this Mac seems to only pull info from /System/Library/CoreServices/SystemVersion.plist. This doesn't seem to include the hardware info.

I don't think you could "send" an icon.

I think if you can figure out where it pulls the system info from then yes, this could be modified to show up as a Black Macbook.

Would make more sense to my line of thinking for it to show up as a Macbook Air.
