Default Triple booting (Win7, OsX, Ubuntu) GUID Success - 05-07-2009, 04:17 PM

I did it as follows:

1- Partitioned SSD (32 GB) with OSX installer
HFS+ 15GB (OsX), FAT32 128MB (Linux swap), FAT32 150MB (Linux /boot ), FAT32 13 GB (Win 7)

2.- Installed Linux according to my post @ http://www.mydellmini.com/forum/viewtop ... 319#p60319 (swap partition was reformated as swap, /boot partition was reformated as ext3)

3.- Installed Mac OS, according to several guides (dellefi1.2a5)

4.- boot to linux, install gptsync (<code>sudo apt-get install gptsync</code>). run it <code>gptsync /dev/sda</code>

5.- boot with win7 install disc, erase /boot partition (this will only affect the MBR table, that's the trick). Install windows 7 to last partition (reformat it to NTFS)

6.- boot to win7, make partition 2 (osx) active with diskpart

7.- boot with this bootloader I crafted http://www.mydellmini.com/forum/viewtop ... =23&t=7293 to OsX, reinstall dellefi1.2a5 bootloader

8.- enjoy your triple booting system

Looks good, except it looks like you are installing Ubuntu to an SD card. I've got enough room on my SSD for a triple boot, so I'd like to try doing everything on the SSD.

What I just do something like this?

Boot OSX and make drives:
Partition 1 - OSX (26GB HFS+)
Partition 2 - Ubuntu swap (2GB FAT32)
Partition 3 - Ubuntu / (5.4GB FAT32)
Partition 4 - Win7 (24GB FAT32)

I just wonder about step 5 where you erase the /boot partition. That is now the / partition, and would wipe out the entire Ubuntu. Would it be better to do something like this?

Partition 1 Primary - OSX (26GB HFS+)
Partition 2 Primary - Ubuntu /boot (150MB FAT32)
Partition 3 Primary - Win7 (24GB FAT32)
Partition 4 Extended:
Ubuntu swap (2GB FAT32)
Ubuntu / (5.2GB FAT32)

That works if you are using MBR partition type as you are limited to only 4 partitions of each type (7 maximum)
The beauty thing in GUID is you are not limited to a number of partitions. On step 5, about deleting the / partition is from the MBR table not the GUID one, so as long as you don't touch that FREE space on Windows Ubuntu will be there.

How did you get the windows install to work? I am trying a slightly modified version of this where I am just installing OSX and XP. Every time I go to install XP I end up with the error message about the hal.dll file missing or being corrupt. This has something to do with the MBR doesn't it?

OK, after reading you instructions again and reading about gptsync I think I see where I am going wrong. I'll see if I can get it to work. I thought that had to do with installing Linux which I am not going to do, but I do have unbuntu installed on a usb disk, hopefully I can make that work.

This is great, but I'm still too dumb to figure it out. Any chance of a more detailed write-up? I too would like to install Ubuntu on the hard drive.
