Re: My new Vostro A90 is freezing like crazy! - 05-10-2009, 11:17 PM
I had the same problem after installing OSX using the 2 usb stick method. I was able to make it better when i customised the OSX installer and got it to only install the components I needed but it would still occasionally crash after running for a few hours and it would crash at strange times when nothing was running. OSX ran better with 6GB free on the SSD.
My config was 1GB ram , 16 gb ssd.
I recently reimaged the Mini back to windows xp factory default and it was really slow. It never crashed in windows but i had to disable windows prefetching and remove indexing software etc to get it work work properly. I think which I still have to do is SSD partiiton alignment.
Anyone have any ideas with the OSX lockups with the spinning wheel with the 1GB ram 16GB SSD factory Dell config?

Resurrecting this old thread. Did anyone ever determine the cause of random freezing?
I'm having problems on my recent A90 (16GB STEC) running 10.5.6 and EFI 1.2a. It would randomly freeze up completely, requiring a hard reboot. I've determined it is not a temperature issue. Console log files haven't been very helpful. I've reinstalled OSX twice, re-positioned the thermal pads under the hood, etc. This A90 came with bios A04 from the factory. I have a previous A90 (8GB STEC) that I installed 10.5.6 using the same procedure and never had encountered any problems like this. That one had bios A03 from the factory. Keep in mind the A90 bios rev is one lower than the mini9.
The same 2gb Crucial ram was used in both A90s. The only other hardware difference is that my 16gb A90 has a replaced us-int'l kb which shouldn't make a difference.
When it hard locks up, the cursor just freezes in one spot and the screen is completely frozen. The kb is unresponsive. The symptoms are just as OP describes. I've had it on at work all day and playing video from the 8gb Transcend SDHC and it didn't lock up. Other time, I was logged in and 10 minutes later while in Firefox 3.5, it suddenly locks up.
Any suggestion on how I can troubleshoot this issue? I'm concerned if the problem is hardware related and if so, I'll need to figure it out so I can get Dell to fix it under warranty.
