Default Gray Screen - You need to restart your computer. Hold down - 05-07-2009, 07:17 AM

I am new to this, but I am attempting to put osx on my mini (currently has default dell ubuntu).. I upgraded ram to 1 gb, from the 512 chip I had.. I go to select install osx from my external hard drive, and I get to this gray screen every time. Anyone know why?

Just reinstalled Mac OSX this week and ran into this. Two questions:

1. Is the Mac OS code-base you are using 10.5?

2. What version of the DellEFI or Boot123 ISO are you using?

If you are using the stock version of OSX 10.5 (most probable), You must use the Boot123 V7.1 version of the ISO to do the install. After the install is completed, you can update to v8.1 Dell EFI method.

Hope this helps. Took me a while to figure that out.

Grey restart screen is kernel panic, usually hardware related. Check using original RAM in-place, could be new 1GB RAM chip as cause.

Ram is fine, i tryed another.

I put the OSX on an external hard drive.. Could this be the issue? I only have one 8 gb usb stick so i did the steps with trans mac to put it on my external.......Most people are using 2 usb sticks (i tryed using external dvd drive but that doesnt do anything after i put osx cd in ).. so i wasnt sure if putting on my external hd is okay?

I too am also getting the gray screen upon trying to boot off an external HD with 10.5.6. I tried to boot with the OG RAM but no success. I created the image using the disk utility. I'm trying to avoid heading out to buy an 8GB USB stick to see if it's a hardware issue with the external HD. Anyone have suggestions? I'm running the DellMiniBoot123v8.02b1... Thanks in advance.

I got the same message today. I just restarted and everything worked again.

i opted to try the install directly to the 32GB RunCore using the supplied USB cable, the install disk. worked no problem. the OS is running pretty well. I've had a few hang ups but need to research things a bit more now that everything is working.

I have this issue with my 10v, trying to install 10.6 using NBI RC3. I have tried re-imaging the DVD, replaced different USB sticks for DVD image, used external hdd for dvd image and nothing seems to be working.

A couple minutes, after the installation begins I get this error message that I should restart.

I am getting very tired and really would like to install OSX (got 10v for this) but getting close to giving up.

I have this same issue:
Dell Mini 10v w/ A06 Bios
Bios settings are correct
Using external 3.5" usb drive

I am booting using chameleon on a flash drive. The OS Install Drive shows up in the Chameleon menu. I click on it and I get the shiny apple. After a minute, the screen goes gray and stays that way for.....a long time.

My guess is its the external drive for some reason? The mini 10v is brand new and I'm following the guides exactly.
