Unhappy dmg won't mount; "device not configured" - 05-06-2009, 10:55 AM

Hi,

I installed OSX today on my brand-new Mini9 using the DellEFIBootMaker method. Install went well, just as expected but after the first reboot I ran into a problem. I thought I was pretty OSX-savvy but this one has me stumped.

The USB ports on the mini seemingly aren't working. I say seemingly, cause whatever I'm plugging is doesn't work (mice) or isn't mounted (drives). Drives also don't show up at all in Disk Utility, so I can't mount them from there.
BUT: if I plug in a USB drive and then open System Profile > hardware > USB the drive *is* listed there. The drives also show up normally during the boot selct screen.
Integrated USB hardware such as the webcam and cardreader are working correctly.

Install DVD is an original 10.5.0 disc, and I haven't been able to combo-update as yet, nor been able to run DellEFI (I have those on a USB drive... :? )

Anybody else have this problem? Is this due to the 10.5.0 install, and will updating to 10.5.6 or running DellEFI help (which I'll have to do from SD card I suppose, when I'm home from work)? Or is there some else awry?

When in doubt, reboot, reboot, reboot.

For some reason USB started working after I rebooted the mini just after posting... Still, why it only started working after the third reboot, ah well...

That problem is solved, that is, I have access to my USB drives, and I've copied the comboupdater over to the SSD- but here's the next snag: OSX refuses to open any diskimage... Aarghhh :x :x

Next update: tried running DellEFI 1.2a5 to see if that would help, but after that the Mini would hang consistently on bootup. So I reinstalled OSX from scratch - but I keep running into the same brick wall - dmg refuse to mount, device not configured. I tried all the usual troubleshooting tips, did a Google search but so far none of the advice I found has helped me one bit...

Tried:

Code:
sudo kextload /System/Library/Extensions/IOHDIXController.kext
Gives a bunch of errormessages

Tried deleting:

com.apple.frameworks.diskimages.uiagent.plist
com.apple.diskimages.fsck
com.apple.frameworks.diskimages.plist

But can't find those files on the mini

Tried deleting the following:
/System/Library/Extensions.kextcache (file doesn't exist)
* /System/Library/Extensions.mkext (file exists but deleting and rebooting doesn't help)
* /System/Library/Caches/com.apple.kernelcaches (folder doens't exist)

Anyone any suggestions? Please help :| OSX w/o diskimage mounting is, for all intents and purposes, unusable

In ended up reinstalling OSX via the DellMiniBoot procedure, and now I have a fully working MacBook nano. Never did figure out what caused all problems with the DellEFIBootMaker install, but hey, who's complaining?

I can shed a bit of light for future users on how to fix this. (I still don't know why your USB didn't work, but reboot never hurts. ) DellEFI (the app that installs the bootloader and extensions) is only meant to be run on 10.5.6, so when it is run on any previous version it will cause problems. Just don't do it until you have updated.
It is also not uncommon for a previous version to have issues opening a disk image, which is fixed by installing the 10.5.6 update. But then you have the issue like AJvK did where you can't open the disk image containing the update. You need to take it to another make, open the disk image and copy the file from the disk image directly to the disk. This way there is no need to mount a disk image and you can continue on with the update.
