Lightbulb Wi-Fi won't enable! It's a netbook with no "net" (RESOLVED) - 04-16-2009, 01:04 PM

First, I would like to thank the DellMini 9 community. I have really learned a lot on the forum. Keep up the good work!

I just got my Mini 9 refurb a couple of days ago. I now have OS X up and running and got it updated to 10.5.6. I cannot, however, (even after 2 wipe cleans and full re-installs) make the Wi-Fi card be recognized by OSX. I took the back panel off and it said it was a Broadcom BCM94312MCG. I searched all over the forum, but I did not see any fixes for that (Sorry, if this does duplicate another thread). The Wi-Fi did work when I had Ubuntu on it, so it is not a hardware problem.

I even logged in as root and installed the attached Broadcom driver to see if that would help but it didn't.

I am not sure what to do from here. Any help is appreciated!
Thank you!

I installed OSX last night and it didn't find my WiFi until I installed DellEFI 1.1

After a reboot (or three) I went to settings and it set up.

A very common cause for this is if you had the wifi disabled in ubuntu or windows and didn't turn it back on before install OSX.

If this is the cause, you either need to reinstall Windows to run the tool, or I believe someone else has created a USB flash based Ubuntu with the tool on it, it's in this forum somewhere.

Scout,

Thank you for responding. I downloaded the DellEFI 1.1 and installed it, unfortunately that didn't work. Back to the drawing board!

was so helpful!
That worked! I did a full Ubuntu restore (factory install disk) and then enabled Wi-Fi (via Fn+2). I went ahead and signed into a couple of networks to make sure that it was working, which my Mini 9 did with no problems. Then I ran the OSX install procedure again and this time Wi-Fi showed up right away - during the install! I couldn't believe it! I did a restore from time machine from my last install, updated to OS X 10.5.6, ran the latest DellEFI 1.1, rebooted about a dozen times and

"VIOLA!"

I now have a netbook running OS X that only cost me $249 and about 2 days worth of effort!!

Thank you DellMini community! I really appreciate everyone's efforts on the forum!

Sincerely,
~Nick~

I just wanted to mention I had the EXACT SAME problem- same wireless card, same non-working WiFi after an OSX install, and this solution worked flawlessly for me. I took a slight detour struggling with getting my radio enabled in XP (this thread here solved that problem- the wireless switch driver is hidden on Dell's site) but once I had it working in XP, my next attempt at an OSX install could not have gone easier- I used an external dvd drive, for the record. Thank you nickswanson and BillThyCat for the information. It saved me a huge headache.
