It'll be an HFS+ formatted disk, so you can use it with any Mac. Linux can read and write HFS+, but write support is disabled on journalled filesystems. Windows won't see it without third-party software like TransMac.

I already have a modular solution for mounting USB hard drives to the exterior of the case which I'm using to store a portable iTunes library (pictures later). I'd love to be able to just swap external drives when I want to boot a different OS.
Alternatively, what's the viability of having a bootloader on the internal SSD that lets you boot external drives without enabling legacy mode?
