if you run (case sensitive)
Quote:
kextstat | grep PS2
you should have a list of 3 or 4 kexts. The ApplePS2Touchpad kext should have a version number equal to 1.1.2. If not, you didn't install the kext correctly (and you do have to reboot after running UpdateExtra.app)

Well just installed Kext 4...up/down scrolling works well. Can't get side scrolling to work though. Maybe I'm not finding how to do it properly.

Thanks, can't wait to see the pref pane up and working.

vertical scrolling is the only kind that is enabled at the moment.
Horizontal scrolling is disabled (I didn't bother to enable it because of the size of the trackpad).

Cool. Well then, seems like its working as you designed it. My GF just saw me scroll up and down....she said "how did you do that" hehe....needless to say, I'm going to install it on hers pretty soon, lol.

Thanks meklort the shieldless knight!

I'm glad to see it's been improving!

I don't know about the others, but the double tap to drag function works really painful for me, it moves your cursor really fast to the edges of your screen when your finger is near the edge of the touch pad. If you are dragging something, selecting a section of text or files then it is fairly annoying. It always happens even if I don't want it to be there because the touch pad is so small. I would like to request for another feature, that is the behaviour of double tap to drag is like the Macbooks and Macbook Pros rather than generic PCs. That would be much better.

The kext I've uploaded doesn't have tap to drag enabled, however I have it working mostly on my versions. I'll try to make it work like my macbook (and it's already similar).

This looks great! Thanks for your hard work!

Quick question... The only additional non-stock feature I want is vertical scroll... In that case, what do I need to install -- just one of the kexts, or all of them?

Thanks again,

Randy

Success! Vertical scrolling works for me, and so does tap-to-click! That said, I'm also experiencing some minor quirkiness some others have noted:

1) The trackpad is suddenly much slower, necessitating a tweak to the prefpane.

2) The trackpad "enjoys" vertical movement and, in fact, does so while locking out horizontal movement at times. In other words, moving the arrow (cursor) on the screen, say, 5 degrees north-northeast, becomes impossible sometimes because the trackpad simply wants to lock into vertical movement. This sometimes proves to be annoying when editing text and attempting to place the cursor just so within a paragraph.

3) The trackpad's vertical speed is faster than its horizontal speed. So, for example, if you make circles with the trackpad, you'll see the on-screen arrow responding with vertically-stretched ovals instead.

However I am enjoying vertical scroll when browsing the net so much, the trade-offs are, for me, worthwhile. Moreover, maybe it's my imagination, but it seems to me that one stock irritation has mostly disappeared with the installation of your kext, viz.: When I used to type big stretches of text like I'm doing right now, the cursor would occasionally jump wildly to some other part of the already-typed text, and I would suddenly find myself inserting text into an unintended place. For whatever reason, when using your kext, it only happens about 20% of the time compared with before.

I hope some of this feedback proves useful as you continue perfecting this great kext.

Appreciatively,

Randy

1) I just guessed on a scaling factor that seamed to work. It'll be user adjustable with the new pref pane as well.
2) This is probably do to the scaling that I'm doing. Since its an integer and not a float, it drops decimal points and when you move left or right, its already a smaller number than vertical as you noted in #3.
3) This happens because I'm currently ignoring the number of samples per mm. I'll make it use that when it scales the values.

I basically threw together the motion portion of the kext so that I could get onto the scrolling. It really does need to be tweaked before the final version.

4ish) The reason why the touchpad is less sensitive is because with the built in firmware, it starts sensing motion when the Z value (pressure) is 8 out of 256 (8 is equivalent to hovering above the touchpad).
With the new kext, I am ignoring anything below 25, which corresponds to light finger contact. I may make this value configureable in the future.

Thanks for the feedback, it definitely helps.
