As far as I know, this never worked with our trackpad (at least not with the apple pref pane I have installed). If it did, I don't know why it wouldn't work now. I can always program in a method that when a new mouse device is plugged in, it disabled the trackpad (and when unplugged, re enables it).
It's not that it doesn't work, it's that the ability to toggle it has gone from the prefpane and it was there before (I was using the 10.5.5 one installed by DellEFI). I'd appreciate having the option back because my thumbs brush on the touchpad when I type.

I finally upgraded to Kext15, and I'm wondering what settings (both in the apple pref and the ps2 pref) people are using that make things smooth. I was on kext9 I think, and it seemed smoother. Any help is appreciated.

Brilliant! My OS X Mini is complete.

Thank You!

I dont know why the option would dissapear. The kext still report's the same capabilities to the os. I dont konw what pref pane version I am using, but I believe I never had that option.

That's probably due to the scaling used to make the movement 1:1. I really haven't looked into it after I implemented the fix, but I do know it needs some optimization.

You're welcome

And before I forget, here is a kext (that I've had for a few days...) that should make dragging work better. Draglocking wont work on it though. I've been a bit busy, but I'll try to finish up the driver soon.
I'm not going to upload it on the first page until it's a bit better.

Melkort
Just took the dive and installed the touchpad drivers. Fantastic job. Two finger scrolling works brilliantly - thanks for all your work.
Can I ask you a question though. At the start of the thread, you implied that the hardware probably didn't support two finger scrolling and then, a month down the line here it is fully formed and working very well - something to do with a W (width value). What is this? Is it the ability of the hardware to identify the size of the contact on the touchpad?

According to the synaptics specifications, the touchpad has to have the multi-finger detection capability set to specificaly detect two or three fingers. If the capability is set, the W value can be 0 for two fingers, and 1 for three fingers. In our case, those values will never occur because the touchpad (firmware) doesn't support that type of detection.

What the touchpad does support is a width value and a pressure value. When you press really hard on the touchpad, the Z (pressure) value goes up, and when you place two fingers on the touchpad and then separate them, the W value goes up. The two values are semi dependent on each other, but they are independent enough that we can detect two+ fingers better than if we just used the Z value.

The algorithm I use it just Z * W < threshold to detect two fingers since they are not independent. Like I said before, they are independent enough that if you just press really hard with one finger, the W value will only go up slightly. Because of this, one finger will give a small value, while two will give a large value. I have the two multiplied because the W and Z values aren't too reliable, and so they will often go below the threshold, but both together do not fall below the threshold as often.

So basically, the kext emulates two finger detection by using using the product of the W and Z values. It isn't as good as if the touchpad supported it, but it works

Hopefuly that is understandable and doesn't just confuse people.

I tried the new kext with improved dragging. And so far,it is great. It does not pick up random mouse movement as dragging anymore. Thanks!

@meklort:
I upgraded yesterday to your latest kext, dragging definitely works much more reliably without many (or none, don't think I had any) mistaken recognition.

One thing I did notice though is a large (maybe 250ms or so) lag introduced to tapping that is only present when dragging is on (no different with drag lock on). That is, the tap registers right away, but it doesn't seem to occur until after the delay. With dragging off, taps occur immediately (that is, fast enough that I can't notice a delay). I didn't think this happened one or two kext's ago when I last had dragging on.

Great work so far on the driver, it's definitely made my life a little nicer.
