| Member Posts: 58 Join Date: Feb 2009 | I have a suggestion for scrolling support. First of all, thanks for pursuing side-scroll - I think this is the most important scrolling implementation for most users by far, since it is already available under both Windows and Ubuntu, and so most users are used to or expecting it. As for your two-button-click implementation, why not use this to activate a full-trackpad scroll mode? Right now you're using it for an extra click event, which makes sense, but in OS X a middle click usually just triggers Dashboard, and I think that A) a lot of users could care less about Dashboard, though of course they could remap the functionality to Expose or something, but that leads to B) the standard Expose and Spaces hotkeys are super accessible on the Dell Mini, since they are Fn+(Home Row). So for quick app switching or calling Dashboard, etc, the Mini already provides handy hotkeys right where OS X expects them. By using the both-click to engage scrolling, you also keep mouse functions all collected on the mouse, which is probably more intuitive to many. SO, my vote is for Ubuntu/Windows-like side-scrolling (hopefully with some useful sensitivity adjustment) and for an option to enable "Horizontal and Vertical scroll while both mouse buttons are pressed". I had it set to emulate the middle button so because I read that the dell drivers do that for windows (and to open tabs easier in safari), but I'll definitely make this an option. The problem I'm having right now with absolute mode is converting it to relative events for the os (mainly scaling to a value expected by the os, I have to determine a good value before it'll work right). Whenever I have used an external mouse on my MacBook or Dell Mini, it has always been just fine. I use the middle button mostly for opening new tabs in web browsers. http://osx.mechdrew.com - News and Guides for Installing Mac OS X via NetbookInstaller - Now on Twitter |

I'll make it configurable so that the user can select which way they want it (initially it'll probably be a plist file, but I'll make a preference pane for it later on). This one uses the full trackpad to scroll when you press both buttons ( press both to enable, and then both again to disable). I could make it so any button press would disable scrolling, but this is the way it is for now. I also could make it temporary so that you have to hold down both buttons is people want it. The scroll rate is just some random guess by me, I'll make it configureable in the future (after I get sidescrolling working). That would be the most ideal for me. I've always imagined being able to press and hold, say, the ctrl key while using the trackpad to scroll around. I'm not too fond of the permanent scrolling idea. (Permanent as in having to press the keys again to disable.) http://osx.mechdrew.com - News and Guides for Installing Mac OS X via NetbookInstaller - Now on Twitter |
