Default Re: DellEFI 1.1 Final - 04-10-2009, 07:57 AM

Upgraded from 1.07 to 1.1 and no issue at all I can see to date. All went smoothly. Just ran the dellefi executable and followed the instructions.

Note in case others found this too: I was having no issue with 1.07 and would have left the system alone (if it ain't broke do not fix it) but then after running Picasa beta I was getting complete system user interface lockups when doing batch edits on many photos. ie OS X died big time. Some research showed this used to be a problem in the old Tiger days - not Picasa but such lockups - and were due to graphics drivers. 1.07 used Tiger drivers I believe whilst 1.1 uses native 10.5.6 hence the upgrade - will see if I can kill Picasa again. So far so good . . .

Thanks to the authors and to other forum members for all the great work

Awesome...That fixed it. Thank you very much!
Sorry for being an ignoramus here but :
What does "Regenerate the dsdt file" mean?
What is the dsdt file?
And how do you regenerate it anyway?

Thanks in advance!
(for I Have this bugging choppy sound problem since I updated to DellEFI 1.1).

start dellefi - find the "remove custom dsdt.aml file" and use that option. Restart.
start dellefi - the option should`ve changed indicating that you want to create a custom dsdt.aml file.

and that’s how to recreate the dsdt.aml file...

This is a truly amazing tool and I sincerely appreciate what people have put into it. THANK YOU!

Now that I have accomplished a "proof of concept" on my Dell Mini 9 and am really happy with how it's running OSX off an external hard drive, I'm looking forward to replicating my experience on a Runcore SSD which I have arriving in a few days (ordered some time ago). My question to the DellEFI experts now is, does running DellEFI touch anything in the Mini 9 hardware, like the BIOS or anything, or does it only modify files stored on the boot device?

The reason I'm asking is because it seems to me that for those of us who have a Runcore and a real Mac handy, this process could be SO easy. Forget about all those long and convoluted sets of instructions, just plug the Runcore into the Mac with the micro-USB port, install OSX, then boot off it (yes, before anyone claims otherwise, modern Macs can boot USB you just need to Google a little) and run DellEFI...then stick the SSD in the Mini and be done. No second USB stick, no EBIOS errors, no syslinux, no complexity.

However the reason I didn't try doing this myself was that I was scared to run DellEFI on my real Mac while booted off my external USB drive, because I didn't know if it was going to do something weird to my Mac's firmware. So can anyone tell me if this method I'm proposing is sound?

Should work fine... dellefi doesn't touch anything in the hardware, just adds some kernel extensions and writes an efi boot partition.

Except you would still need to run DellMiniBoot so that the Mini can boot into OSX (or Chameleon)

And you would obviously want to run DellEFI to get all of the functionality (kexts)

Why? If you run dellefi on the drive from a real mac it should be all set to boot directly without dellminiboot (And should have all the proper extensions installed). The only thing you don't want to do on the mac is generate the dsdt.aml file, as that's hardware dependent.
