Default Upgrading to a Runcore SSD using OSX - 03-21-2009, 05:46 AM

(The following was posted earlier in the Hardware Thread)

I replaced my stock 16 GB unit with a 64 GB RUNCORE.

Here are my steps:

  • Download SuperDuper. It is free for what you need it for. Good program for more intensive backup routines though.

    Install SuperDuper.

Plug your RUNCORE SSD into the USB port using the supplied cable.

Using OSX Disk Utility, partition the RUNCORE SSD Using "MAC OS Extended Journaled". Before starting choose options and GUID. Partition with the number of drives you wish. I used one partition.

Start SuperDuper choose your existing SSD as the source and the RUNCORE SSD as the destination. Backup all files.

The completion of this "should" make the RUNCORE SSD bootable (more on that later)

When this is complete swap out the SSD's

Boot the computer using your 1.07.01 DellEFI USB or Disk and choose the DellEFI folder and then choose the DellEFI application

(Even though SuperDuper was supposed to have made the SSD bootable It would not boot until the Bootloader was reinstalled).

Choose Custom Install and then choose Reinstall Bootloader, Install Dell Mini 9 Extensions, Hide DellEFI files and Fix Bluetooth. Press install.

    Restart the Hackintoshed Mini

This worked for me. YMMV. If there are any needed additions or required omissions let me know and I will edit this post.

Good luck and I hope it works for you!!!

Now I have a nice big fast drive that is now running VMWare\Fusion that supports an installation of Windows XP

I am attempting to upgrade to the 32GB Runcore using your tutorial but am having trouble

I cloned my data over via USB and swapped in the new 32GB - no problems. The problem is that I can't boot from the DellMiniBoot123 CD-ROM when the 32GB Runcore is installed. The CD and cables are all fine when the 16GB SSD is installed, but it behaves badly with the 32GB installed.

When I select the optical drive at boot, I get this error:

PXE-E61: Media test failure, check cable
PXE-M0F: Exiting PXE ROM.
Operating System not found

Any ideas?

Thank you
- h

Toggle the USB Legacy option in the BIOS. I am not sure if this is it but sounds like the problem.

Are there any other drives (USB's) plugged in?

I would be interested in any solution here, as I have pretty much the same problem. I cloned my old SSD (32gb) using Carbon Copy onto the runcore 64 gb, swapped the drives and got the same set of errors

PXE-E61: Media test failure, check cable
PXE-M0F: Exiting PXE ROM.
Operating System not found

A BIOS check showed that the runcore was correctly recognized by the BIOS, the filestructure seems intact.

Thanks for any help

Sounds a bit like the boot sector wasn't copied as part of the cloning? If you make a DellEFIBoot Stick, can you boot from that & select your SSD and get into MacOS?

I had this exact problem after upgrading via SuperDuper to a Runcore 32Gb drive. I would receive the error message:

PXE-E61: Media test failure, check cable
PXE-M0F: Exiting PXE ROM.
Operating System not found

I was following the instructions in the first post, but after a while of head scratching, I realized that I was not following the first post instructions exactly. Specifically, I was not doing this step:

"Choose Custom Install and then choose Reinstall Bootloader, Install Dell Mini 9 Extensions, Hide DellEFI files and Fix Bluetooth. Press install."

Unfortunately, I was using the automated install instead of the custom install. Once I performed the custom install, everything worked perfectly.

3 cheers for RTFM!

Still couldn't get SuperDuper! to work on my M9 but I used Carbon Copy Cloner and I got it. Just like the first post said CCC is supposed to make the clone bootable but it didn't. I got the same error messages as the above posts. I followed the instructions in the first post and it worked as described.

BTW, CCC took 40:44 to clone a 8.64GB drive. All together it took about an hour to complete.

Now to test the Runcore........

when i got my 64gb runcore, i just decided to do a fresh install of osx since it only takes 45min to do. I did a backup to an external drive, then did a restore to the runcore once freshly loaded.
