It is an extremely bad idea to run an operating system from a USB flash drive or SD card

The multiple reads and writes on the flash memory will not only be slow, it will degrade the memory quickly... and the average lifetime of flash memory is 50,000 reads/writes (some as low a 10,000, some as high as 100,000)

The same applies to running an OS from the internal SSD -- it's made of flash memory too. Generally, though, you can expect several years of operation from flash memory, even with heavy write usage.

NetbookInstaller 0.8.3 | USB Legacy Mode off | No camera

Have to say, now works fantastically,
I'm running great speeds off the USB Hard Drive, boots straight in if it's present and to XP if it's not there which is exactly what I wanted.
Because of the capacity, I have the Full Ilife 09 suite which is what I wanted

Great forum and the Dell utils are amazing, everything works

Thanks for all the input to make this possible

I went to compusa and got a ocz rally2 16gb usb drive to use as my main storage.
It went something like this:
- on my windows machine I formated the rally2 using transmac and the retail osx image.
- I used a 2gb for my dellefi boot drive
- a 16gb sdhc card for temporary install

I booted from the 2gb, the installation started from the usb 16gb to the sdhc 16gb.
After a while it was done, then back on my windows machine I cloned from the sdhc card to the usb drive as the mini can't boot from the card reader.
I finished the installation and now I'm typing this from my hackintosh running from a 16gb usb drive and it's very useable.
My problem is with the sleep part as I need to have the legacy usb on to boot from the usb.
Could I get more specifics on putting OSX on an USB flash drive? I am a novice in this area. Thanks.
