OK, I tried this weekend to do this with a Dremel tool. Holy crap NOT easy. While my finished product is not bad, it is not what I want. The cuts are not perfectly smooth, although most would not notice THAT much.

Where does one start looking for people to laser cut a lid? What type of business?

Appreciate it all!

Sign shops would be able to laser cut logos as long as you have the DXF file.

Finally I found it!
Some time ago I saw an apple logo mod where the guy used the logo from a mac laptop but he also used the plastic from the lid basically only cutting a square around the apple.

That made the logo to look more "factory" but I have ideas to improve it as you could use some fiberglass "gel" to fill the gaps and sand it down then paint so it will look flawless...

Here are a few cuts made in a plastic Apple lid. We had to play with the laser to get a good cut. We did 6 cuts, most look pretty bad but we finally dialed it in. Once I get my mini we'll be cutting that as well (Dell called again today and pushed out the delivery again; 4 weeks and counting). As for the yellowing associated with the laser cut, we were able to minimize the yellowing and it was easily removed with a little sand paper (Sanding is required because the apple logo is smaller than the dell logo in places). You can cut from either side if you'd like but both methods are going to required a bit of touch up. I had mine cut at a local sheet metal shop that I do business with. I'm guessing a sign shop or a plastic vacuum/pressure former would be better at cutting Polycarbonate. Also once I'm done cutting I'm going to have to spend some time cleaning up the edge with some sandpaper to make it presentable. That is if my Dell ever arrives.

OK have now given up. My Dremeled out lid looks like crap. Have seen worse, but if you are going to do this, it needs to be perfect IMHO.

Anyone know the part numbers for a black lid? Have seen the part number for the red one on here but not the black.

Going to have to do this again, but need it laser cut.... man this is getting to be expensive!

What exactly did you remove from your lid? I'm assuming the foil and the foam, but is there a layer below that? Also do you need to remove anything from the back of the LCD or does the light shine through the white barrier?

Also is the lid made out of Polycarbonate? there should be a symbol on the non cosmetic side of the lid that says >PC< or have a recycle symbol with a "7".

There is a foil on the back and a black foam pad... only need to take those out.

The white paper on the back of the LCD lets the light right through.

There is a #3 on it....

Question:

Found a local guy at an engraving shop who says he can do it, but his system does not use a the file that is supplied here.

Not a real problem (I HOPE) as I will provide him with a Apple laptop lid and a image for reference.

He did ask how big (tall etc) the logo is in size, and for the life of me, I cannot find it ANYWAY using Google etc. That is what are the EXACT specifications of the Apple logo on the back of the laptops?

UPDATE: Reno_apple provided them to me: They are, for anyone that wants them:

Height 1.8296
Width 1.4514
