Default OSX off of a 16gb USB drive - 03-08-2009, 06:42 PM

I just ordered a new mini 9 with 8gb SSD, rather than trying to formatting the SSD to put OSX on it, could I install OSX to a USB drive, I just bought a 16gb OCZ diesel with 30/15MB/s reads/writes. I'd like to have the flexibility to try OSX on my mini without having to do a system restore if I don't like it. TIA

I tried searching but all i can find are people talking about installing off a USB drive, not about booting OSX off of it.

Yes. You'll just need to format it to Mac OS Extended using the install disc (or USB if you are doing that method.) Then just select your 16GB USB drive to install to. The SSD won't even be touched.

I just installed OS X onto the exact same flash drive that you own. It works, but it runs very, very slowly--way more slowly than I ever imagined. You might want to try it as a proof of concept, but for practicality, it's not worth the effort. Hope that helps
