He is the master of that stuff, but I think you should be able to do the BootISO on CD and the OS X portion on a flash drive. Most people don't do that though, as they can simply pop their retail DVD into the DVD drive (assuming you have an external DVD drive and not just an external CD drive).
I have done a few reinstalls on my system, and I was able to boot the ISO from a USB drive and do the install from a DVD drive (the exact opposite of what you asked, but it is still kind of relevant).
