Default OSX External Monitor/Projector Qeustions - 03-01-2009, 12:49 PM

Hello everyone,
I just installed osx using the Type11 method (I used a cd for the type 11 stuff and an 8gb flash drive for the osx dvd because for some reason my external drive wouldn't recognize it) and I have a few questions.

1) I need to present a keynote presentation at school using a projector, does the display port work? Or are there any settings I need to change to use it?

2) I have an 8gb SDHC card and i was wondering how well an application would run from there? I know it would be slower but would it be worth it? Edit: I answered that one for myself.

3) Which web browser is fastest? I have tried firefox and it seemed a little faster, however I haven't tried opera or any others. I think google chrome has a beta for mac has anyone tried it?

Does anyone else get a blinking yellow/orange light from their ethernet port when its not in use? This has never happened before and I am using wireless internet. Its the light to the right of the port.

Thank you in advance, this is an awesome forum

I just converted from the Type11 method to the DellEFI version (which went relatively smoothly, you should consider it - you can do it straight from the Mini 9 without hooking anything else up to it). I did not/not install the mirror option.

This evening I plugged my Mini 9 into my TV. That's effectively the same as plugging it into a projector - just another VGA screen. Anyhow, it showed up as another monitor hooked into the Mini 9 to the right of my existing screen (ie- drag off the right and your mouse appears on the second monitor). I moved iTunes over onto the TV and was able to nicely display Star Wars. Looked pretty good - just like from my AppleTV. I didn't watch the whole thing, but about 15 minutes with some action looked good.

If you were doing a Powerpoint presentation or something from the web, it would work the same way. Just put the display window onto the projector and you will be good to go. DellEFI also let's you do mirroring using an older video driver. Not sure of the necessity for that in your purposes, but that option is also available.

The new Safari 4 beta is supposed to be pretty fast. I haven't tried it though. Firefox wouldn't be too bad either. You can run apps or data from the SDHC/USB flash drive. If you don't have to, I wouldn't for a presentation, but that is personal choice.

I should try the Ethernet port on my Mini 9, but haven't yet. So I don't know about the orange light - check under Network in System Preferences and turn off Ethernet, otherwise I have nothing. Sorry. You are motivating me to experiment later though!

Hope this helps. Good luck!

An orange light normally indicates there is no wireless connection established. A normal connection should show a green light.

Thanks for the help with the projector paduck.

I fixed the orange light from the Ethernet port, all I had to do was turn off the Ethernet in the network utility.

And what are the advantages of the Dell EFI version and the Type 11 version? http://mydellmini.com/forum/howto-in...7-9-t1106.html <I used that method just to clarify.

Default Problem with projector - 05-31-2009, 01:52 AM

When I connect my Dell 9 to an overhead projector, the video goes crazy. Gray with vertical lines. I tried toggling with the Fn 8, but it doesn't change anything. When I get the gray screen I can type and see the screen change, but I can't read anything. It connects to an external monitor with no problem, as an extended desktop.

Any ideas?

Thanks,
Jeff

after trying different terminal/mirroring command, etc... method that uses the [alt][space] calling the application found below finally worked for me.

i had to call the program several times, but finally it stuck and mirroring/external worked on a recalcitrant Dell projector. also still works with my other monitors. no idea why it takes several incantations the first time, but it seems to work fine after that.

ok, so using it for real at a presentation, i found that it doesn't work with 'spaces'. when you switch spaces the screen corruption returns for spaces that did not have the power point application.

still better than toting an extra XP bag around.
