Default 24 hour Dell Deal for Mini 9 - extra RAM, SSD space? - 02-27-2009, 09:19 PM

Hey guys,
Just wondering if I get the bare bones Dell special for $199 today, which RAM/SSD do I need from newegg to turn this thing into a hackintosh?
Also, are bluetooth and the camera upgrades worth it?

TIA!

You can install OS X with an 8GB SSD, but you will have to tweak it to get it installed - 16GB gives you better room. The Runcore (see above) seems to be the popular choice, but I think they show as out of stock at this time. The SSD physical size is not standard, so just buying any PCI-e SSD is not an option - you have to get the correct one.

The RAM is standard DDR2 PC 5300 (I believe), so just get a 2GB stick (only 1 spot in the Mini 9, so don't buy a 2 piece RAM kit) and you'll be fine.

Edit*
Make sure the RAM you buy is a SODIMM (for laptops). Just wanted to be more clear.

Thanks for the response.
So it would be better to just get it custom ordered with the 16GB installed by Dell? Its only $100 more.

The Runcore benchmarks faster for writes than the STEC (that is the Dell stock brand), but the STEC does better for reads (I think). I've got the STEC 64GB, and it's fine - but I've never had a Runcore so who knows maybe I'm living life in the slow lane.

Also, I looked on Ebay for a Runcore SSD and there are a good number of SSDs being sold as Runcore drives that are not. Be careful if you decide to purchase from there...
