I am trying this method but grub won't let me boot OSX correctly. I'm only doing a dual boot of OSX and ubuntu:

1: EFI
2: OSX
3: Ubuntu
4: swap

I installed grub on (hd0,2) and wrote it to the MBR so grub comes up when I boot. I added the following lines to the /boot/grub/menu.lst

title OSX
root (hd0,0)
makeactive
chainloader +1

When I try to select that option in grub it gives me a "Non-system disk" error. Anything I need to do to my DellEFI install to get it to work? I don't want to reinstall the chameleon bootloader because that will take control away from grub and I can't get chameleon to see my ubuntu partition (tried many, many times)

EDIT:

Duh, I figured it out. In my many attempts to get either bootloader to work I had changed around the "boot" flags on the partitions using gparted. I had to set the fat32 EFI partition's boot flag, but UNSET the boot flag on my ext3 grub partition. Then Chameleon saw the ubuntu partition and worked great.

First off, thank you for the step by step. I'm such a noob hacker it's not even funny. Thanks to this forum, I've learned a TON of stuff. So, I decided to take the plunge and make my hackintosh dual boot XP. I followed the directions to the XP install. After using the text setup (so the USB wouldn't eject), the computer rebooted and all was looking great until I got a "missing or corrupt hal.dll" error. I made sure to edit boot.ini, even reformatted and reinstalled with the TXT option. Got the error again.

I'm at a loss here. This is my first experience installing windows on a computer, and it's complicated by the lack of a disk drive. Does anybody know how I can cure the hal.dll error problem?

Not sure what "text setup" means ? Which tutorial did you use ? I installed xp and osx but I don't recall having to edit the boot.ini file.

Installing Win XP Pro via UFD (Universal Flash Device)

That's the link provided on the first post of this thread. Since I was using a USB to install windows, I chose to do a text setup instead of GUI. The first post of the thread also says to edit the boot.ini.

Okay, I think I fixed my problems. In following the step-by-step to the letter, I had set up the NTFS partition for Windows as the third one. I went back into Gparted and re partitioned the SSD with the Windows NTFS partition as the first in the list, and the install seems to now be working without a hitch.

I don't remember where it is in all the posts of various forums and blogs scattered across the interwebs, but I read that THE WINDOWS PARTITION MUST BE THE FIRST PARTITION or else the hacker needs to be a coding wizard I guess.

I'll be back if I encounter anymore problems. If not, assume the rest of the guide worked nicely.
