Default Ethernet Slow - 02-19-2009, 03:54 AM

Not a huge issue for me as I use mostly the wireless. I did go to my studio and connected directly to my router via ethernet and the connection speed was very slow. Wireless remains much faster and router is not a cause as I connected directly to modem as well. Just I thought I would mention.

On another note my camera connected without issue and I was able to shoot tethered although the processor was a bit stressed. Install has been very stable and can't really complain.

Its only a half-duplex ethernet (at least under OSX) so sending data to it is much slower than from it.

In my experiences I get about 8-10MB/sec when I transfer data from my mini 9 to another mac on my network. When I send data to it however I only get 800KB-1.2MB/sec.

I was getting about 1200 kbs download and 6500 kbs upload according to speedtest.net was pretty consistent.

I wasn't talking about internet speed. I was referring to LAN speed..

I hadn't noticed this yet. I'll have to do some testing myself to see if I see this as well.

Is the driver we're using for the Ethernet adapter written to only be half duplex?

The driver we are using is apples RTL8169 driver (although we have a 8139...) The driver does support full duplex and whenever I have used it it workes perfectly. (I have sustainably gotten 10mB/s down and about 9mB/s up)

After reading the second post I also tried the open source version (realtekR1000) and it works at full duplex (10mB/s down and up) as well. (I modified the driver to report the correct modes as well as to notify os x of changes to the status such as cable connect / duplex mode / etc).

Personaly, I would like it if we didn't redistribute apple's code (which they have not released as open source) so I'll try and get the open source version to work better in the future.

@meklort

Thanks for the reply. My coding days are long since passed, but if I can help let me know...

I was going to test this myself, but my Mini didn't make it to the office with me today.

I have full duplex working now. Enabled it via the terminal and it now shows as full duplex in the network settings.

Hi, any update here?

I am having this problem as well. Wired ethernet is about 1/10th the speed of wireless. I tried changing the speed/duplex settings with the network system preferences but it seems to revert back to " blank" status.

Is there a new driver I can try? What is the terminal command to change the duplex setting via the terminal?

Usually not a big deal, but when I am copying multi gigabytes of data the higher speed of Ethernet would be nice...

I'm having the same problem. I've tried to update the RealtekR1000.kext but it has not fixed my issue. My ethernet port is stuck on 10/half and nothing I do will change it. I hope there is an update to this issue.
