i was only giving it as a suggestion, which I intend to try myself anyway.
if both have similar functionality, why not give the other option a try to see if it works better on the mini?
granted, if you are used to QS you would want to use it, but if it slows you down, then you will likely disable it anyway. at least we are giving suggestions for alternatives. at least for the time being.
in any case, i keep reading that QS is a resource hog and the mini ain't exactly a NASA supercomputer, so perhaps there is no way of optimizing QS. don't know, gotta try it.

It may be related to how frequently quicksilver re-scans your disk to update its index. I think the default setting is once every 10 minutes. If you use many of it's advanced features maybe each scan takes a couple minutes, which would be almost constant disc access like you describe. Personally I only use it as a quick app launcher, and set it to scan only once an hour.
To change the setting go into the quicksilver preferences and re-run the initial setup.

I use Quicksilver (can't cope without it) and haven't noticed a problem. It comes up immediately for me. I haven't noticed any lag (I would have done - it's pretty much the only way I launch things). It was the first application I installed, so I've been running it for about a month now. I've got a 16GB SSD (partitioned into two volumes) and a 16GB SDHC (partitioned into three volumes), with Quicksilver set to scan every 10 mins.
Maybe it's to do with the version of Quicksilver you're running? I'm at B53.3814.
