Default SD Card slot - Creating/Developing the driver/kext - 10-18-2008, 05:06 PM

I figure we can use this thread to brainstorm a way to get the SD Card slot to start working in OS X.
The slot is a JMicron device. The good news is that it DOES work in Linux. Linux drivers have been ported to OS X in the past, such as the Tulip driver, which supports some network cards (I think I have an old Linksys that uses the Tulip driver in OS X on my main machine). So the first step might be getting the source for the driver extracted from Linux. Then we're going to need a serious guru to figure out how to compile it for OS X.

I wonder.. If the Linux driver has already been ported to BSD? Or if there's already a BSD equivalent? That would make it much more close to plug and play.

I have Ubuntu's live CD. Will that work to pull up those terminal entries for you? Or does it need to be installed? I'm guessing it would depend on if it worked in Ubuntu to begin with. lol

Live 8.10 cd does not have a driver for it. Actually I am not sure I have seen it work in my 8.10 install but to tell the trith not sure I have really tried it. Perhaps it is only on the dell ubuntu image? Either way it is not on the live cd.

I'll be installing 8.10 onto an external hdd via usb tonight God willing ( he may not be as I've managed to screw up 4 downloads so far. 52% this time! ) I'm going to try and tackle the sd problem.. I'm thinking that maybe I should've waited 6 months before I bought mine... then everything would work! hehe I'm a glutton for punishment though... gg

I just loaded my 8.10 live "CD" (it's been installed to a USB drive key) and it does recognize the card reader, as it instantly mounted a Canon 2GB card that I had inserted.

Humm interesting I did not see my card when on the live cd. it was a 16 GB card. I hope this does not mean the slot does not support SDHC, but that would be dumb to not support that these days. Maybe I had formatted it strange. Anyway I will try it again and see if I can figure out the module loaded for it.
