Default Re: SD Card slot - Brainstorming a solution - 11-13-2008, 03:24 AM

I am making no progress and it is not for the lack of trying..

I downloaded the debug version of the kext, used kexthelper to install it, rebooted and nothing..

Using kextstat I could see the driver was not loaded so I loaded it by hand using kextload..

I now see the driver loaded but still no response from the reader and NO debug messages in the kernel..

I am running 10.5.5, nothing special loaded or done to OS except standard mini 9 things like removing extra languages, remove PPC binaries, etc...

Here is the stat output after a few loads and unloads..

92 0 0x3447f000 0x5000 0x4000 IOSDHCIBlockDevice (1.0.0d1) <63 17 12>

I am sorry if I am being a pain as the driver clearly seems to work for others..

Glad to help if I can..

Thank you...

Ah, should have mentioned that.. I am using the type11 method for installation and have had no problems to date.

Love it, love it, love it..

Getting the sd card reader to work is only gravy.. I am using external usb sticks for extra storage but the sd slot is hidden and therefore prefered..

The driver is very preliminary at the moment.. I'm sure when it's done/working a lot more, Type11 will roll it into his install ISO.

Yeah, thanks.. I know it is a young piece of code/driver..

I am not anxious, just trying to help by testing.

Thanks for all the great work and help here and in general..

I'm at a total loss to explain this. The only way that my driver won't spew something to /var/log/system.log is if it doesn't detect a card in the slot. You already said your card worked in an external reader so we can rule that out. Umm.... The only other thing I can think to try is to try it both with and without a card in the slot when you load it (can't remember if you already did that). It almost sounds like the slot itself might be bad (missing the card detect somehow).

Actually, I just had another sinking thought... Can you download PCI Utils from here:

http://forum.insanelymac.com/index.php? ... ntry801295

Run lspci -nn and send me (or post here) the output. Dell has a bad history of changing devices in their machines without changing model numbers so two "identical" machines require different drivers. I wonder if they changed the card reader and your machine is either the new or old version...

After the 1gb, I tried a 2gb card that I KNOW to be an SDHC card. I tried several times, but got "unreadable" errors each time. Should be a good log for ya.. I did a "sudo tail -f system.log > debugging.log" just before loading the kext, so you should have all of the applicable messages. I love that we are working as a team on this. I just wish I wasn't such a brick when it comes to coding..
The debugging log is here.
got it thanks looking now.

Woah... Uh, you don't appear to have a SD slot in that list! Is it turned off in the bios? Can you even turn it off in the bios? Did you ever try the slot in a different OS? I think you may have a defective unit.
