Default Help Slim down my build - 10-16-2008, 02:59 PM

Ok so I have OSX installed to an external drive and now I want to clone that build to my internal SSD. Trouble is I'm working with 8GB. I've seen reports of people getting their install down to 5.2gigs, but I'm stuck at over 7. I installed 10.5 without all the extra junk, but after updating to 10.5.5 It seems some of the junk has come back. I uninstalled the printer drivers, removed a bunch of apps, and ran xslimmer and monolingual already. Am I missing something? Attached is a picture showing the breakdown of my HDD.

Since my 32gb SSD is on backorder, and I've read about several people here managing to get OS X onto the 8gb SSD, I went ahead and did it last night. Here's what I did:
I used the iDeneb 1.3 distro, because it's 10.5.5 out of the box.
It doesn't have any of the drivers we need, so I downloaded the driver packages from the InsanelyMac Dell Mini 9 thread and installed them.
I run monolingual, I ran xslimmer, I deleted all the apps I don't plan to use (calendar, contacts, ichat, many many more), I went prowling around the hard drive deleting other things, such as all the screen savers, all the desktop backgrounds (those two alone freed up the most space). Turning off sleep mode seemed to free up 100megs, for some reason..
Type this in terminal:
sudo pmset -a disablesleep 1

Anyways.. It's all installed now, and I have just over 1gb free. I'm using 5.84gb out of 6.83gb. I had about 300megs free after the installer completed. I haven't installed any apps yet.
Good luck with your install, it can be done, but it's not the most comfortable place to live.

To somewhat reiterate:

1. Remove/Do not initially install Printer drivers and X11
2. Remove unwanted Apps via AppCleaner - FREE
3. Remove unwanted languages via Monolingual - FREE
4. Run XSlimmer - $12 or Run StripPPC.pkg - FREE (Although does not seem to be quite as thorough as XSlimmer)
5. Disable Sleep: sudo pmset -a disablesleep 1
6. Disable Hibernate: psudo pmset -a hibernatemode 0 then sudo rm /var/vm/sleepimage (which was a 2GB file for me)
7. If you don't care about your computer 'talking to you' remove the 700MB 'Alex' voice: sudo rm -rf /System/Library/Speech/Voices/Alex.SpeechVoice
8. Use the following open source tool with great graphical view to find the largest files on your drive then delete 'em yourself: http://grandperspectiv.sourceforge.net/ - FREE

Cheers!

Monolingual does also remove non-Intel binaries (may be not as efficient as XSlimmer).

By the way, Monolingual also removes spell dictionaries (along with localisation of apps), which is something I didn't want: I don't care having localisation in French or German but I need the spell dictionaries.

Does any one know where the spell dictionaries are on a fresh new Leopard install (I'll might then be able to get them back from my (real) Mac).
