Talking bootloader issue - 12-09-2011, 05:56 PM

hey
I installed leopard 10.6.3 on mini9 using NBI_084RC1 I used method of cloning the os to a usb drive and the NBI to a second usb drive ...at first I was losing wifi after running OSX updates...now after re-installing twice and rerunning updates..everything runs...BUT !!! mini9 will not boot on its own,,I have to boot with the usb drive with the NBI on it in ...then everything works....I dont want to lose my wifi capabilities again so I am waiting to hear on this issue....before I try anything else on my own.....
this may be simple...BUT I am new to this mac hack attack stuff so please give me the dumbass version of instructions to fix.....

I think you have misunderstood the install process. If you have the ability to boot into osx, then after booted run NBI. Choose to install NBI to osx's partition, then your partition should boot by itself. The NBI_084RC1 is used after install, the NBM is used to install. Good luck!

Sorry if this seems silly, but just to clarify you are running the NBI application after you update, right? also, I'm not sure what the newest one for the mini 9 is, but for the 10v there is a newer one than the 8.4

Cool Bear with me please.... - 12-12-2011, 02:58 PM

OK..I used the instructions in dell mini9 guide OS X 10.6.3 Retail DVD -->USB no MAC, A GUIDE It only talks about using the NBI_084RC1.img.zip file I reread and find no mention of the NBM file....during the install at the end of the article it talks about an NBI file from dropbox...but that is all I can find...I do not see what I did that is contrary to those instructions...do I need to start over ???...when and how do I use the NBM file and where do i get it ?

THANKS

NBM is the original startup installation program (disk). NBI is a program that puts startup files on your harddrive. These files allow you to boot without a flash drive. If you just run NBI from your desktop, install NBI to your boot partition, it will install all necessary files. If you'll put a link to the guide you used, maybe I can read and explain to you. There are numerous guides, or I'd try to find it.

a clarification: NBM (netbook maker) is a Mac Application used only if you are preparing your initial installer USB using a Mac. That's why there is no mention of it in the guide you followed, which does not use a mac.

as to your bootloader issue, not certain why running NBI...351 isn't fixing it for you.

question: have you gone back and changed your BIOS settings to boot directly from internal HD, or is your bios still set to boot from USB?

suggestion: run NBI..351 and uncheck all the boxes except the one that says install chameleon bootloader.

cheers.

now that clarifies things a little....
did as you suggested...
Hard drive set as first boot drive...get endless boot cycle when trying to start with USB in or out...have to select usb at boot to get to boot....
everything seems to run correctly except for sleep issues???
should i start over and try a different approach ????

sorry, i'm at a loss ... if you do start over, i'd make sure to wipe the hd clean (after BACKING UP anything i wanna keep, of course)-- what i'd do is get a copy of Parted Magic on USB (Linux Distro) and use the disk utility there to make the drive 'raw space'. and then reformat to fat 32-- you'll need to reformat again to mac when you do the actual install.

this would ensure you're starting with a 'like new' drive.. but honestly can't guarantee it would ultimately fix your issue.. but it is what i'd do if i was to start from scratch.

cheers.

Thumbs up maybe i figured it out ???????? - 12-18-2011, 12:39 AM

started over...copied and pasted the NBI to my hard drive folder...now it stays there and the dell mini boots with out the need of usb drive,,,,,after a couple more reinstalls I am running 10.6.7 with wifi, trackpad ,sound and everything except maybe sleep working correctly now... I would recommend staying away from 10.6.8 as i think that it caused most of my problems as I attempted to update.......MANY thanks to posters on the forum, while not solving my problems, gave me the inspiration to keep going,,,,,
