Default Shrink mkext to improve boot speed - 07-27-2011, 07:36 PM

Hi there,

was wondering if some of you already delete some kext and rebuild mkext to see an improvement in boot time speed ?

Like ATI and Nvidia etc..

 French Mini 9  | 2Go RAM | 64 Go SSD | OSX 10.6.8 / Win 7 | NBI .8.5 | BIOS A06 | USB Wake : OFF | USB Legacy : ON | BlueTooth : OFF

I've tried this, and only removing AppleHDA.kext that gives significant boot speed improvement.
i think the other kexts that aren't used by our machine aren't loaded to Extensions.mkext, so deleting them only give very little more free space on our hard drive, and deleting the wrong kexts (that are used by our machine) will cause problems.

What about the Extra folder ? If i want to delete the vaio kext for instance.
The fact is, when i unpack my mkext from extra i can see acard kext, ati, nvidia so..

How could i pack it again without update.app ?

I've also removed vaioPEnabler.kext and NVEnabler.kext and 1201n.dsdt.aml on Extra and still no boot time improvement, but I love to remove the files I don't need, so I modify NBI as my want (e.g. Removing some unnecessary kexts, add modded iobluetooth family kext, removing other machines support, adding my own display color profile, replacing chameleon theme, adding some kexts blacklist, etc) so when I run NBI, every kext on S/L/E that I don't need on my machine will be removed (or replaced by one I need), and kexts on Extra folder are the only kexts I need, and also chameleon theme is the theme I love, and also I allways able to turn off bluetooth on whichever version of OS X without doing terminal mod anymore, but still no boot time improvement.

Extensions.mkext on Extra will only rebuild by running updateextra.
Extensions.mkext located on System/Library/ isn't used anymore on Snow Leopard, the Extensions.mkext on Snow Leopard is located on System/Library/Caches/com.apple.kext.caches/startup/
It will be rebuild automaticly if we delete it, any kext on Extra will not loaded to it.

What mini do you got ? 9 ? If so, can you share your nbi ? Did you run update.app after 10.6.8 upgrade or it will screw something ?

I can share it, but it works only for 10v.
I don't actually update my mini to 10.6.8, it's 10.6.8 with mach_kernel and system.kext from 10.6.7.

You can purpose it to the 10v community then. I won't use it on mine. I guess it will screw something !

Yes, it may screw everything, not just something.

You can modify the NBI yourself like I did, but there will be no major advantages.

I ran update.app and their is no problem after it. I don't really need NBI now.. I delete almost all the kext i don't need.
