Default Image or actual install into recovery partition? - 07-22-2011, 08:45 AM

I've posed this question before and never really got a definitive answer. What is best for a recovery partition on an external drive, a disc image or actually installing OS X into that partition? For now I have restored the disk into there, but it doesn't seem to give normal access to the utility menu that way and making a working iso with Toast to restore is giving me fits.

Obviously this more pertains to Real Macs as I also have my install USB for the Mini's, but if ya have any ideas about this shoot, thanks.
