Default Repair Permissions not really working? - 03-25-2011, 10:31 PM

I just updated to 10.6.7 on my 10v (single OS install, no other partitions) and wanted to do some spring cleaning since I haven't messed with it in a while.

I booted into the OSX installer on my USB drive to use the DiskUtil and repair permissions on my HD. The first time I did this, it actually showed progress in the Details pane, but it eventually froze the system and I had to restart. I'm attempting a repair a second time and it just seems to sit doing nothing. I get an estimated time left of 1 hour and 14 minutes and nothing popping up in the details pane. Its been running a good 20 minutes without any change.

I also ran a repair disk on the HD and it came back with no errors.

Anyone know if there's some way to get this going correctly again or if I just need to let it sit?

Why aren't you just repairing permissions from within the install?

Because it's better to run services like this externally without using system files that need to be checked also?

But, if you are using your USB installer with the older version of NBI, can it actually do a proper repair of permissions.

I understand doing it from disc with a Mac, but I've never tried it on any of my Hackintoshes.

My installer was made using the 10.6.0 disc and NBI 0.8.4 final I think, but in order to get 10.6.7 to run I had to use the "special" NBI.

I'm just wondering if the version on the installer matters when doing a permissions repair.

I'll try it on my mini 9 and see what happens.

OK, I ran mine from the installer and it found 2 issues. I ran it again from the installer and it found no repairable issues (just the modification to System/Library/CoreServices from the 10.6.1 update that can't be changed).

I then re-started the mini 9 and booted into the OS X 10.6.7 install and ran disk utilities and had it repair permissions again and it found 8 variances having to do with the java update I installed last week. These weren't seen when running disk utilities from the USB installer.

I'm running the same test now on the 10v.

OK, I just completed the test on my 10V, also running 10.6.7 which I have never run Repair Disk Permissions on, ever.

From the USB installer, it found close to 100 variances, but it did seem to lock up. I moved the cursor around and went from no findings to Repair Permissions Complete.

I ran it again from the installer and again it locked up mid test, but this time it found nothing but the modified System/Library/CoreServices that got modified after 10.6.1.

I booted into the 10.6.7 install and ran Disc Utilities and again Repair Disk Permissions, and it found an additional 15 variances, again all having to do with the recent Java update.

I think I'll continue to Repair Disk Permissions from within the OS X install
