Default For anyone who added the Novatel internal 3G card - 01-16-2009, 01:47 AM

I have been using the Novatel EU870D in my Mini for a while now, it works quite happily in Windows but the drivers I had didn't work in OS X. I found some kexts that will get it to work on a forum for the MSI Wind.

It isn't as easy to use as the nice connection software you get for Windows but at least you can get connected

To create the connection:

Goto your network preferences
Select the Novatel Modem
Press the Advanced button and goto the Modem tab.
From the Vendor list choose other.
From the Model list choose HSDPA (assuming you are using HSDPA of course! I guess EVDO users choose EVDO)
Press OK and the Advanced window will close.
In the telephone number box enter your Access Point Name (APN). For example I use orangeinternet for Orange in the UK.
Enter your username and password if required.

Save the details and hit connect.

Hi,
I have download the Kexts, mentioned above, and used OSXTools (installed with iDeneb) to install them (although I am not clear why there are two versions of HuaweiDataCardDriver.kext - one in the first link and then a different sized file of the same name in the 2nd link).

Both kexts seem to have installed correctly, however when I re-boot and switch on the internal Novatel Expedite EU870D card nothing shows up. I have even tried installing the 3G installer package file from the Novatelwireless download site (found on another thread - but can't remember the link, but I found it with a google search), but to no avail.

I am not sure what I have done wrong, but the Novatel card does not show up in the Network drop down list (only Ethernet, Firewire, PPPoE, VPN and 6 to 4).

Any ideas?

I dunno why, but I had similar problem with my 3g modem, then I opened the driver file with Textedit (from the modems area) closed it again, and the Networks dialogue saw it... may not be related and maybe a timing thing...

Hi all,

This discussion has gone quiet recently, so I thought I'd add my success story here with a few keywords and info for other searchers to find.

I have a Dell Mini 9 and a Dell Latitude D620. The Mini 9 is running Ubuntu, the D620 is running OSX.

I've just bought a Dell-branded 3G data card, the Dell 5520 (the cheaper variant of the 5530, I got mine from Ebay for £17) - also known as the Novatel EU870D or Novatel Merlin U740. This is a mini PCI-E card that appears on the USB bus of the host, this is the lsusb info from Ubuntu:

Bus 001 Device 003: ID 1410:2420 Novatel Wireless

So, Vendor ID 2420 and product ID 1410.

I have this working in both the Mini 9 and the D620 with the XP drivers from Dell under XP SP3, using the built-in usbserial driver in Ubuntu, and with the Novatel drivers for OSX from here:

Installation Instructions: Mac OS X (SnowLeopard) with Novatel Drivers (v3.0.7) for 3G modems - Novatel Wireless

Once the kexts are installed (either by extracting them from the pkg or just running the pkg installer as normal), they load fine and the Novatel modem appears in the main OSX network settings. I've used the GSM mode and standard Vodafone 3G settings and now everything works first time, perfectly.

This is all using OSX 10.6.4, and using the built-in WWAN scripts from OSX on top of the Novatel kext drivers linked to in the above Novatel web page. No other hacking is needed, and all in all it cost me £17 to add to my laptops.

I hope that's useful to someone!
