First,
thanks to Underwhelmed for pointing me to this thread:
"Is Hibernation actually possible?
Last page, post #80 is the answer."

So hibernating works great as an alternative to shutting the system off completely.

It is a horrible alternative to sleep though, since it takes so much longer to wake up from hibernation.

I decided I wanted the best of both worlds. So I've set my pmset hibernate mode to 0, which will give me true sleep, and instant wake.

For hibernation I compiled a little script I can use rather than shutting down.
Find it here:
Hibernate.zip - Box.net

There are two flavors; one sets mode 3, for those of you who are using that mode and are happy with it. The other sets to mode 5, which works for me as I have not been able to use mode 3 for true hibernation. They both set the default to mode 0, for normal sleep. Only run the scripts as an alternative to Shut Down. Use sleep otherwise for quick wake up.

As a dual boot bonus, using Hibernate5 allows me to hibernate out of OS X, run whatever sessions I want on XP or Ubuntu, and return to OS X from hibernation-- So OS X will boot in around 30 seconds even after i've been using another OS.

If you want to know more about what these scripts are automating, read the hibernation thread Overwhelmed pointed me to.
If you don't care, and just want it to work, download the scripts and check them out. I recommend Hibernate5

Cheers.

Edit: fixed the link for script.
Edit 3: rewrote script, original was only working when terminal was open, so I put in a line to open terminal. It also called for user password. rewrite removes the need to enter password and it no longer calls the terminal.
much smoother.

I was going to try it, but I get an error message that it has been deleted or is not available to me after logging in to Box.net

Cool, thanks for the update and the re-write. I'll give it a try in a bit.

I tried it, set Hibernate to 0 in Terminal and ran the Hibernate5 script and it went directly into Hibernation, no problem. It does seem to only work once before it needs a re-boot though. It will come in handy at work since I was running Hibernate3, closing the lid and pulling the battery to put it into Hibernation. (I only use my 10v for surfing during 2 breaks at work not all day as I have a blue collar type job)

I tried the Hibernate3 Script and it also put the machine into Hibernation, but upon waking it up it gave me an errror sying the image was incorrect(?). Not a big deal at all, really.

Anyway, thanks for your work scripting this out, having any type of Hibernation option is a great advantage over waiting for the mini to boot up on a rather short break.

Thanks for the feedback. I'm guessing we'll have varied results. Mine's only had to do a full reboot once using mode 5.
Mode 3 just puts mine to sleep. If I take the battery out the way you were doing it, it just reboots after.

Cheers
