Default [Question] speed up start up? - 01-12-2011, 05:30 PM

Anyone know of a way to speed up startup times in OS X?

I'm up to date 10.6.6, on 10v.

thanks.

I usually put mine into Hibernation instead of shutting down. There's a thread here-
Is Hibernation actually possible?
Last page, post #80 is the answer.

I read about some people moving the audio kext around in the load sequence, but honestly, that's beyond my depth knowledge wise.

Edit-
Duh, I failed to notice you dual boot, so Hibernation is most likely not a huge help to you, but I'm gonna leave this because it might help someone else.

Oscar that's the holy grail, if you work out a fix be sure to let us know. there is a terminal command to reset a value (can't remember off the top of my head) that only saves a second or two so it's a bit pointless really.

If you disable/remove audio kext in SL, you can reduce boot time more than a half. NBI 0.8.5 pre also fix audio kext so it will take much shorter time to boot, but you should backup before installing it.

What version of NBI are you using?

As far as I know, versions of NBI before 0.8.5pre do not allow for hibernation (and the 0201029103123blahblahlah version). And, having just recently installed 10.6.6 and NBI 0.8.5pre, I can say the boot times (from a cold boot) absolutely blow the old NBI out of the water.

Give NBI 0.8.5pre a shot if you're willing to test a beta.

mine has gone down by maybe 20 seconds after installing 10.6.6 and the newest NBI

Now on a triple boot... just because i can.

anyway, hibernation does work. i use option 5, rather than 3 as most posts seem to indicate. i think the difference is that 5 sets hibernation always, whereas 3 sets it for battery only--not sure tho. just that 3 didn't seem to do anything for me.

still looking to speed up actual boot time.

Cool, I'm not really familiar with the variables. I'll try 5 and see how it works.

I was just closing the lid, waiting for the light pulse to indicate sleep and releasing the battery to put it into hibernation before putting it away in it's case.

No need to pull the battery with option 5. True hibernation.
