At the point we have it right now almost everything is working 100% and in my opinion it is totally viable to use full time on your mini.

As far as performance it seems to run just as well as any other OS on this machine, and apps even open faster on it than on my 2.2ghz core 2 duo Macbook pro due to the SSD speed.

I can't comment on ubuntu but I can say without a doubt that general performance of OS X on the mini is excellent. I upgraded my memory and SSD to 2GB and 64GB respectively but the base configuration of 1GB and 16GB was more than adequate.

Clearly the mini9 is going to struggle with heavy duty work like video encoding - a 1.6GB m2ts file converted to mp4 h254 took my mini nearly 3 hours while the same file took only 50 minutes on my MacBook Pro. Having said that, uploading video to iMovie or pics to iPhoto, while not the fastest, is certainly more than bearable for me. In fact I'll be taking my mini on vacation with me and will use it extensively to upload my pics and SD / HD movies.

Other apps like office 2008 and even Photoshop CS3 work fine. In fact, loading and shutting down apps is quicker than on my MBP. I've hardly used my MBP since getting this baby, which in itself is a testament to how well this machine performs and the great work the team on this forum has done.

The fact that OSX runs so well, and the support that this form has for it, is the ONLY reason I bought the mini9. I am more than impressed with it.

In real life i assume you have to use it as a mac mini. With external keyboard, mouse and display you'll have a much better experience.

It will do the job like a charm thanks to Type11 and every mini9/osx peoples who are involve in that part of the forum. :P

I agree. It's very portable, and handy to have in that respect. However, if you plan on using it as a real computer for day-to-day activities, probably best to plug it into an external monitor and use a full size keyboard/mouse. I went on NewEgg and got a 4 button MS bluetooth mouse for mine. It's amazing how much I hate being on it for long periods now that I have a mouse that is easy to use, and has 100% flawless scrolling.

If I am using mine for extended periods, I use a mouse, external display, and an old USB keyboard I had laying around from an old G3 iMac. (keys are already set up right!, plus I can connect the mouse though the keaybord and save a port on the mini.) We have two iMacs in the house in our library/study area for the kids. I set up my "docking station" in my room so my wife and I can work in privacy if needed and not have to wait in line behind the kids! I like the ability to have the mini amywhere in the house I need it as well. I have been doing alot of iPhoto work lately, consolodating photos from my old laptop PC and the iMacs, and working with my MobileME photo galleries. After the initial install, and the 7.7 / 10.5.6 upgrades, the system has been stable, no issues. I also use Time Machine (just in case!) and it works great as well.

what i mean is using it as a netbook, not sitting at home plugging it in with keyboard or external moniter.

does wifi, bluetooth, usb stick and sdhc card slot work perfectly?

is there emacs, latex in osx? skype, pidgin, xchat??

i am not gonna do video editing or photoshop with this 9 inch laptop

Yes, it works perfectly. Frankly the OS doesn't know it's not really running on a Mac. So the programs run exactly as they normally would on a real Mac. For the budget minded, I feel it's a better option than a roughly equivelantly priced G4 iBook/MacBook because the Intel processor makes it more compatible with the current generation of OSX software.

Will the mini lag considerably if I install programs to a SDHS card? How does one install on a SD card anyway? Do I drag the dmg file to the card? Thanks.
