Question External HDD and OSX Sleep Issue - 10-28-2010, 02:41 AM

Hi
I have a dell mini 9 running 10.6.4 and everything works including sleep. I've just bought myself an external hard disk to give myself a little bit more room. The problem I'm encountering is that when the mini wakes from sleep it displays an error that the external drive wasn't ejected properly.

Does anybody else have this issue? Has anyone got around this issue. I guess the optimal solution would be to eject devices automatically before sleeping but i can't find any setting to do that.

I've got a WD Elements 320 GB 2.5 USB powered External HDD. I read somewhere that it's due to the fact that it's powered by USB and when the mini goes to sleep it cuts power to the USB ports immediately and hence doesn't do it very gracefully. A way to do it gracefully would be nice.

Thanks.

I have seen that happen to me once, but I don't think there is a solution other than to mount your external HD only when you actually need it. (I don't remember if it happened with the mini or with my eMac- but I can see that this issue would not be specific to the mini).

Yeh it's a pain in my butt coz as per your suggestion in another thread I'm running XCode off the external HDD which means there is rarely a time that I don't need the HDD mounted

You could turn USB Legacy and Sleep back on, but then you couldn't sleep your mini, so...

Mini 9 | OS X 10.6.7 | NBI 20100616212351| BIOS 05 | 32 GB Runcore | 2 GIGS RAM
10V | OS X 10.6.7 | NBI 20100616212351 |BIOS 06|160 GB|1 GIG RAM| 6 Cell Dell Battery
Functioning Hibernation

Back up Mini 9| OS X 10.6.7| NBI 20100616212351| BIOS 05 | 32 GB SuperTalent | 2 GIGS RAM

The mini's are passively cooled, heat escapes through the keyboard. If you run a mini for very long with the lid closed it will burn out your processor.
