Angry System-wide finder issue and haven't recieved any help after 2 weeks - 08-28-2010, 10:15 PM

I have a Dell Mini 10v with Snow and Ubuntu with Cham. boot loader

When I boot my computer, I see the desktop, dock and my desktop files, seemingly normal.
Dock: When I click on the dock, nothing happens with the exception of the stacks which once you click on anything within, inevitably fails.
Spotlight: No luck.
Top bar: Nothing
Desktop files: preview works
Finder: Some error appears when opening. Often when opening a program, I get a message saying it is the first time opening it but the button cannot be clicked. Once, a window opened that i have never seen and can't explain.

I deleted these files in single user mode
  • com.apple.finder.plist: the primary Finder preferences.
  • com.apple.sidebarlists.plist : the Finder Sidebar preferences
One time I somehow managed to load onyx and do the scripts and disk repair but that did not help (froze midway)

I did the applesetupdone in single user mode. I created a new account but it seems to be a system wide error.

Dont know if this could be it but:
tmsafetynet kext pauses in boot for 5 seconds. Not sure what that means.

I would like some form of useful help from this forum.

If all else fails, I would like to know how to backup all my files (in ubuntu, it is read only and I am apparently not the owner of the files) and reinstall with access to only (get ready for this) Ubuntu, a few 2 GB flash drives and a PC.

Im willing to do whatever it takes.

I randomly got Onyx to work. But that did NOTHING. Any help from the forum would be nice.

If ANYONE on the forum would like to know, I deleted the finder plist using single user mode. That caused apps to attempt to open but It would be quickly stopped by a window saying "since this is the 1st time opening...." and then after a minute finder crashes. I still need help and any ideas are appreciated. I only have access to internet and ubuntu-dual boot. I would like access to my files and apps... -_-

Hi.

Sorry, I have no idea what might be wrong. Some important system file being corrupt, maybe?
Being in your position I'd go for a clean reinstall, then copy all apps and data over from a backup (which I DO hope you have!). But if you're on the road that may have to wait until you are back.

Good luck!

You know, after 5 days, this is all I wanted

It's still screwed at the moment though. I thankfully have ubuntu, for now

hi

have you tried a disk utility permission repair and does a finder relaunch do anything?

also if you can open AM and see what process might be causing that.. you could just need to un-instal a broken application. your problem isn't a generic problem ergo few replies..

Hello

I thought I made it clear that I can't open any applications. I can go into single user mode fine. Not safe mode.... And In regular, it goes onto the desktop fine but no apps can open, not on the top bar, stacks or anything.

Right!

If the slot is not otherwise needed, you could use a card for a time machine volume that's always up to date, never forgotten, and can be read on any mac with a card reader. Just make sure you have a second external backup in case the whole machine gets lost -- something in the cloud like Dropbox, or a frequent second backup at home.

thought you said you managed to open onlyX? what you can't even open the little menu bar apple options to relaunch finder?

if you have istat in your widjets that has a auto open AM button..

I reckon you've got a broken app or something and a clean install is your best bet at this stage like the other guy says..

give Apple a ring don't forget you get 90 days Telephone cover with your OSX.6 disc.. but don't say it's on a dell huh..
