Ok, i know its not the best one to put it on. but thats ok, its the only thing i got. So I got the external hard drive to boot up the mac osx and now i want to put it on the new 500GB HD which had windows 7 on it, but I want to wipe it and put OS X on it.

When I open disk utility, it only shows the Mac OS X install dvd (the external) and below that line it shows disk 7, 8 ,9 , 10, 11 and disk 12 all of which are 10 MB and disk 12 shows 60mb. I cant format or do anything with these. Where is my Maine Hard drive??????

PS if i insert a mem card in the slot it does recognize it correctly

Mac OS X can't read the NTFS partition Windows 7 is installed on. You will need to boot an os that can read it and allow you to format the drive as FAT 32 or GUID before you can use it, AFAIK.

does it show the drive at all? even if it can't read ntfs partitions (which snow leopard can) the drive should still show up in in disk utility and allow you to reformat the entire drive if that is what you want. if it is not showing up there is a more significant problem than formatting.

if you are installing directly to an external drive you can do so by booting the installer on a real mac, installing to the external drive and running netbook installer
