Default Detailed 10.5.6 New Install Type11\boot123v7.7 howto - 01-06-2009, 03:02 PM

Here's the procedure I used to do a clean install of 10.5.6 using v7.7

1) Download the DellminiBoot123v7.7.iso.zip from http://www.mediafire.com/?4zmmmmgouky and create iso image on CD or DVD
2) Boot from iso (on startup press 0 (zero) and select CD/DVD)
3) At command prompt insert retail Leopard DVD and type 9f, hit return
4) NOTE: May need to power cycle and / or mount / unmount DVD drive to kick start it
5) OS X will start to load and a language selection screen will appear with English highlighted - click the next button
6) On the next screen (OS X install screen) select disk utility from the utilities menu, click the top level drive (14.3Gb Stec), click Partition, for the scheme select 1 partition, click options, select GUID Partition Table, select OK. (Optional, can rename drive name now or anytime after install). Click apply, click partition.
7) Once format is completed quit disk utility to return to installer screen. Press continue, agree to licence, select hard drive, click continue
8) NOTE: A standard install of OS X will take around 11.5GB, leaving around 1.2GB free on a standard 16GB SSD. To free up space select customise on next screen (install summary) and uncheck printer drivers (drivers can be added later as required) & language translations. This will free up over 5Gb.
9) Press install - this will take some time (circa 2 hours to verify DVD and install) - it will also FAIL but don't worry, this is expected.
10) Upon fail, press restart, quit installer, restart (or simply power off and back on)
11) Reboot as per 2 above
12) At boot prompt enter 80 (may need to enter it again if it states default device is 9f) then at boot prompt enter -f
13) NOTE: if the machine freezes restart and repeat step 12
14) Answer the Welcome questions and follow the screen prompts to configure wireless etc
15) Download and install the combo 10.5.6 update from http://support.apple.com/downloads/Mac_ ... mbo_Update
16) Reboot as per step 2 and at the prompt enter 80 (may need to renter this if 9f is default) and hit return. May need to repeat this step and / or use -f
17) From the CD / DVD mounted on the desktop launch the install.dmg. When loaded double click the MiniScript and answer the questions, script will install and upon completion will ask you to reboot
18) NOTE: After answering the questions the following error message may appear: mount_hfs: Invalid Argument (1) If this happens launch Terminal (which can be found in Applications/Utilities) and type the following exactly: diskutil eraseVolume "HFS+" "EFI" /dev/disk0s1 Restart your machine and repeat steps 16 and 17.
19) Machine will reboot, Darwin loader will flash momentarily, grey load screen will appear followed by desktop. Launch install.dmg again, this time double click AboutThisMac and follow screen prompts to install
20) You should now have a fully working system
21) NOTE: Further updates can be installed through software update in the apple menu. Repairing disk permissions is good practice and should be run after every software install or update.

How do you repair permissions?

Disk Utility, click on the partition below the drive name on the left side, and it'll be an option in the main window.

How often should you do this? After every update?

Thanks UC, you put out some great information that make this community work.

The only time I ever run it is if I'm having some strange glitch, I run that, reboot, and see if it goes away before posting a complaint online.. hehe.. Needless to say, it has done the job for me..

Ok, I agree on most of the post.

Another big issue: Installing from a clean Leopard 10.5. disk and updating to 10.5.6 via combo update did not work in my case. After rebooting with 10.5.6 I could not run the miniscript on INSTALLER.DMG. Error was "mount:hfs EFI failed". Even repairing the EFI partition as mentioned in another post did not work. The EFI partition seemed to be corrupt after updating from 10.5 to 10.5.6.

I found a solution: Install from the Leopard DVD the 10.5 version. Do not update yet. Then run the old miniscript from the old "boot123 v7.1 INSTALLER.DMG". Probably you could run the new 7.7 miniscript as well, I did not try. So the EFI partition gets all the treatment it should get, even if you are still running on 10.5.

Then I re-booted from the recent 7.7 boot123 CD (in my case its on a USB stick) and installed the 10.5.6 update. This time the update did not corrupt the EFI..! After doing all the update work I tried the "boot123 v7.7 INSTALLER.DMG" miniscript again and voila! it DID work.

So now I got a 10.5.6, installed from a valid & legal Leopard 10.5 DVD. And I got the full 7.7 additions installed on EFI.

Everything works: Clamshell (!), Battery (!) etc. etc.

When you got your error did you not try terminal from within os x booted on your SSD (not via Leopard DVD)? That worked for me and I was able to install the miniscript no problem after that. It'll be interesting to know if anyone else resolved it this way?

Also it's strange how the combo didn't work for you - after a few nightmares of using the non combo updates on my Mac's I now always update via a combo. Repairing permissions after any crashes / installs / uninstalls is also something I do - it's not necessary, simply routine maintenance.

Yep. I did load form the newly installed 10.5.6 OSX on the SSD. Still, the repair would show me an error that could not be repaired. Probably I got a quite different setting since I installed a german 10.5.6 OSX (but the english files will be installed anyways...)

I did try the setting twice - both times the combo upgrade would render the EFI partition corrupted. But again, there should be no problem in installing the extras via miniscript on a 10.5 OSX system before upgrading to OSX 10.5.6. The upgrade still worked and I did another new install via miniscript after the update.

I did not encounter any problems beforehand with the slipstreamed OSX Leopard DVD. But I am happy now to have a fully regular OS Leopard installation on my Mini. The slipstreamed version did not have any other languages to choose from at install. now I got a full german OS, even if this took about 0.5GB more of my SSD space.

Oh, and make sure you do not install theprinter drivers. Installing all updates from 10.5 to 10.5.6 will use about 6GB of free space on the SSD. Thats basically all free space on a 16GB SSD after installation of 10.5. I recommend you only install the 10.5.6 update and the Quicktime update at first. All other installs like iTunes etc. can be done after your 10.5.6 is fully up and patched.

Just as an info: I did the 10.5.6 update via WLAN and online software upgrade. I did not use the downloaded 10.5.6 combo upgrade. So to avoid problems with upgrading I would recommend to download the upgrade from http://support.apple.com/downloads/Mac_ ... mbo_Update and install it manually.
