Default recover=y not working - 06-18-2010, 03:26 PM

So I tried the update, rebooted, and got the dreaded kernel fail screen. The last thing it prints is "System uptime in nano..." and then the rest of the screen is blocked. What can I do? Am I going to have to reinstall the whole system?

Thumbs up Successful Recovery Story - 06-18-2010, 04:12 PM

OK, I upgraded to 10.6.4 without checking, and hosed myself pretty good.

Here's how I recovered:

Make a new USB install stick with your 10.6 install DVD and NetBookBootMaker 0.8.4RC1

Boot from the USB stick holding down shift, then select your hosed HD. I was able to boot semi-normally at this point. Wireless was not working, so I moved Meklort's special patched NBI onto the machine with another USB stick and ran it.

Shutdown / restart.

All up and running, although some of the screensavers are refusing to run.

Hope this helps somebody else recover, and thanks to Meklort and everyone else who offered suggestions.

I did the following, made a new usb with 10.6.3 and 0.8.4 rc1 NBI, installed fresh, migrated files and settings from old 10.6.0 then used the tweaked file from post 67 then installed combo 10.6.4 update downloaded from apple website

all this was done on a mini 10v bios A00, the result.. working 10.6.4 EXCEPT battery reporter which doesn't work and bluetooth which at 1st didn't work but applied fix from nbi

any help regarding battery status greatly appreciated

Just updated two bone stock 10v's. Ran the patched NBI from post #67 first then just let software update do its thing. Rebooted, repaired permissions (as a precaution), and everything seems to be the same as it was before the update. Thanks M for the quick response to the problems people were having!

I think it's clear now that running NBI from post67 before updating to 10.6.4 does the job.
hardly news, but that's what I did & all's fine.
thank Meklort.

I did the 10.6.4 update on my Mini9 using the new NetBookInstaller version. After the update I noticed, that my bluetooth was permanently turned on and the option to disable it was gone. Anyone here knows how to fix this?

Thanks in advance & cheers,

Just finished the install on my Mini 10v. Was previously running 10.6.2 after multiple attempts to update to 10.6.3 caused KP with "waiting on root" error. Here's the saga:

- Time Machine Backup
- Ran Post 67 tweaked NBI 0.8.4
- Installed 10.6.4 combo update
- Reboot, allow time for everything to complete
- Kernel Panic on "waiting for root"
- Booted recovery=y, tried every several possible combinations of:
- Rerun NBI 0.8.4 tweaked, reapply combo
- Rerun NBI 0.8.4 RC1, reapply combo
- Rerun NBI whatever, sudo mv ATI and GeForce drivers
- Repair disk permissions, etc etc etc.
- Finally booted -x, ran NBI 0.8.4 RC1, ran, rebooted...

SUCCESS! I've got a clean boot of 10.6.4 with all of my data, settings, etc. Only a couple of issues remain:

- No sound (media keys work just fine though, can move volume up and down.)
- Quartz animations are super choppy/laggy. Internet video seems to work okay, but VLC, Quicktime, etc are a no-go. The menu bar isn't transparent, the dock is choppy, and the colors are all washed out as though my display profile isn't even being loaded.

I hope this helps some of the people who have been having KP, and if anyone has any ideas about how to restore my sound and video smoothness, I'd love to hear them. If my Time Machine and Beyond!

The 10.6.4 contains a flash upgrade from february which is now outdated, adobe are advising snow leopard users to upgrade to the latest. Just a heads up.

Here's my experience I had 10.6.3 on my mini 9
I upgraded to 10.6.4 with the new NBI from first post and it was alright but no microphone working and bluetooth toogle not working.
So for the microphone issue I installed from
Sound and mic working with AppleHDA

(I did this when I upgraded from 10.6.2 to 10.6.3 and it worked)

But now I can't boot anymore.
Is there another solution for microphone issue?
