Default Swap/Remap Apostrophe and Semi-Colon Keys in OSX? - 01-03-2009, 06:59 PM

All:
I read how to swap my ; : and " " keys in Ubuntu by following this thread "Swap/Remap Apostrophe and Semi-Colon Keys" : viewtopic.php?f=6&t=1392 and that worked flawlessly while I was using Ubuntu.

Now I have switched to OSX and I am looking to do the exact same thing for OSX.

I read the Remapping Guide... but I didn't see anything for OSX. I also search... no love.

Anyone know how I can accomplish this with relative ease? Thanks in advance for your help... and not only with this issue, but with everything I've learned from here so far!

I think ppl swap the keyboard out w/ the us-intl version for 20 bucks or something, but there's also Ukelele, a GUI keyboard mapper for OSX.

I used Ukelele to swap the ' and ; keys by slightly modifying a keyboard layout nicely made available by Viscaria here: http://mydellmini.com/forum/new-keyboar ... p2619.html

I don't have my mini9 yet so I can't test it, but maybe Double Command http://doublecommand.sourceforge.net/index.html will work? Please let us know.

It looks like it is a frontend for this hack, maybe:

There's also fKeys, but it looks like it hasn't been developed in a while.

Hope this helps!

P.S. - If you are running a dual boot, the Microsoft Utility might be useful to accomplish the same under XP http://www.microsoft.com/globaldev/tools/msklc.mspx.

doublecommand is just for your modifier keys, i think, and i don't find it very useful, as is. and switching the option and command keys is just a matter of going into System Pref keyboard options - the hack referred to above is to get it to work on both an external and internal keyboard, one an apple keyboard, the other not.

if you search for 'swapping keys,' you'll see that someone posted pix of physically swapped keys and wrote about it. doable, but slightly fragile, it seems.

When I had to swap keys on my PowerBook G3 Pismo I had to modify a file in the AppleADBKeyboard.kext file. I imagine we would need to modify a file in the ApplePS2Controller or some USB Keyboard KEXT

This part is extremely simple... just pop them off and swap them.

It's the remapping part that eludes me so far. I'm trying the Ukelele program, but I fell asleep on the couch messing with it last night. I reckon I'll keep trying later today.

I guess I could swap the keys back and just retrain my my fingers if all else fails...

Thanks for helping me.

Did you ever get this working? I looked at Ukelele and it looks like a headache to use. I am not interested in recreating/remapping the entire keyboard layout, just those two keys. Anyone found a quick way to do this?

Holy Crow!

I was literally JUST doing this very thing when this ancient thread popped up! What a coincidence!!

And thanks for the tips... I was trying to figure out how to pop the keys off.
