It will go to sleep if you close it. the only way to have it closed and have the other screen on is to hook it up, turn the mini on and then quickly close the lid

I don't have an external monitor to test but on Real Macs... if you have an external monitor, keyboard and mouse hooked up to the computer (bluetooth keyboard/mouse also work), closing the lid will not cause your computer to go to sleep.
Also, if you want to close the lid and not go to sleep, instead of adding and removing kexts (ugh), you could install a program like InsomniaX:
(I've used it on my Dell Mini and it works great---lives in the menubar and lets you toggle on or off lid-close sleep)

You don't need insomniax, and you don't need to remove the clamshell kext.. Simply type
sudo pmset -a disablesleep 1
in the terminal to disable sleep.
set it back to 0 to turn it back on.. But I don't think that will make the machine switch to VGA out only. I have heard if you power up the mini9 with the VGA monitor plugged in, it will be the only display when you boot up, but you will have TONS of video artifact problems.
