Default Mac os 10.5.8 versus 10.6.3 - 05-01-2010, 03:16 PM

I justed purchased my dell mini 10v that's running windows 7 starter, and don't know whether to install mac os 10.5.8 or 10.6.3. I've read that there are issue (i.e no sound, and bluetooth problems) with 10.6.3. Which version is the best to install?

Hi. It seems the only version of OSX you can legally buy from Apple is no 10.6.3, but I can't find any guide to actually installing it. If you have 10.5.8 you might be better off using that.

Thanks! If I install 10.5.8, can I then go to the apple website and update to 10.6.2? Or can update only be accomplished by using a retail version of mac os?

You need to buy the $30 10.6 DVD to upgrade.

You should have no problems with bluetooth or sound with either the 10.6.3 or 10.5.8 install. The only issue I know of is no sound out the earphone jacks, but the speakers will work. The latest NetbookInstaller will fix bluetooth and get the speakers working. Everything you need for a successful install can be found on this site. Read carefully, ask questions, take your time and all will work out OK.

rymevans, the free updates are done within the OS. You'll need to purchase Snow Leopard (10.6), as it's a paid upgrade. After your 10.6 installation, you won't have any issues upgrading through Software Update to the most current version of the OS. However if you follow mechdrew's guide you'll be all set, from the get-go.

Unfortunately, this isn't exactly accurate. Many of us are having audio issues, including those with random non-working speakers; 10.6.3 / No Sound... However, I've yet to tackle any issues I may or may not be having with my bluetooth. I've just disabled it for the time being, as I'm not in need of its functionality.

All things said, I would make the jump and upgrade your machine. It seems as though a fix is coming soon and the issue, although annoying, is random in who has it and how often.

I stand corrected. I skipped the above thread since I have no sound or bluetooth issues. The good news is that Meklort has diagnosed the issue and has promised a fix. You gotta love that guy.
