Default Apostrophe in hard drive name prevents boot? - 03-31-2010, 12:47 PM

So I finally got my 10v yesterday ().

I installed from a 10.6.0 disc using 0.8.3 (since upgraded to 10.6.3 and 0.8.4).

On my first install, the OS installed ok, but after the first reboot simply sat at a flashing " _ " prompt and never got to the boot loader. After a format and reinstall, it worked perfectly.

The one difference is that the first time I formatted my drive as "Colin's HD" and the second time I used the standard "Macintosh HD".

I'm wondering if the apostrophe in the name could have prevented booting the first time? I don't want to rename it to try .

Honest answer I have no idea but if you did the exact same thing the second time just without the apostrophe then it does seem likely. I just named my drive OSX so had no problems

Never ever use special characters in file names, directory names and device names. While some software may handle these special characters correctly, a lot will not. They are especially an issue when you are dealing with different locale. For example, if you have a file with the German name of "ÄÜÖß" your language settings and encoding (codepage) might change it into "????". I also try to avoid blanks and replace them with an underscore.

Every real Mac I've ever used has had no issues with the name "Colin's HD".

Whatever went wrong, this is definitely not a hardware issue. Especially not since it worked the second time on the same hardware.
