good suggestion, I read also fontbook prefs duplicate fonts tip, thanks. I couldn't get fontbook/anything to open.
now solved, here's what worked for me;
restart in safe mode(hold shift at startup ) - that will empty caches,fonts.
I also ran MainMenu in safe mode and cleaned caches there.
...'Starting up into Safe Mode does several things:
It disables all fonts other than those in /System/Library/Fonts (Mac OS X 10.4 or later).
It moves to the Trash all font caches normally stored in /Library/Caches/com.apple.ATS/(uid)/ , where (uid) is a user ID number such as 501 (Mac OS X 10.4 or later).
It disables all startup items and login items (Mac OS X 10.4 or later).
Mac OS X 10.5.6 or later: A Safe Boot deletes the dynamic loader shared cache at (/var/db/dyld/). A cache with issues may cause a blue screen on startup, particularly after a Software Update. Restarting normally recreates this cache.

I got the dreaded kernel panic at bootup, thankfully it was just the CHUD developer tools extensions that were causing it. I ran CHUD Remover and everything booted up wonderfully. Thank god
By which I mean, if you're getting kernel panics and you have the developer tools installed, check to make sure that the panic report doesn't mention CHUD anywhere in its' output. If it does, boot "recovery=y -v", go to /Developer/Applications/Performance Tools/CHUD/CHUD Remover
Then I re-ran NBI just to be safe, rebooted and it came up as expected.
If you actually need CHUD tools, I guess you're kind of boned for now.
