now when i go to install the mac os i know i can use an external hard drive but does it need to be formatted. Thanks in advance.

Yes. You'll need to format it as a single "Mac OS Extended" partition by using the Mac's Disk Utility.

Check Mechdrew instructions:

so i can onlt use it with method one not two? i dont have access to a mac

i think you need to use method 2 instal via other operating system other than mac. im looking forward to install mine too, once my mini arrived. Since i dont have 16gb flash disk, i probably gonna use my external HD, i hope it'll work.
