Default n00b question re: handbrake/VLC - 03-12-2010, 10:55 PM

In anticipation of receiving an external cd/dvd to install software, I've read threads about using the 10v to watch DVD's. I downloaded VLC (didn't want to monkey with getting the internal DVD player working) and HandBrake (both for 32 bit).

If all works well with the 10v recognizing the external cd/dvd drive, will I be able to rip DVD's to a usb stick with Handbrake on the 10v? Some of the older threads suggested that it will take to long.

Is there a better method, since I do not have another PC with OS X (Mac), just another Dell Inspiron 1501 with Vista.

Thoughts? Can you point me in the right direction. I'm interested in having a couple of movies for plane trips.

Mini 10v (Black) - BIOS A06 - Mac OS X 10.6.0 - 1GB RAM - 320GB HDD (7200 rpm) - NBM via USB - NBI (ending with 51) - Legacy Off

Had a happy 10.6.6 machine and updated to 10.6.7, but no love...maybe I'll do a vanilla install...but probably not.

Use the Vista PC to rip it and put it on a USB formatted as fat32.

I would use the iPod/iPhone settings in Handbrake myself.

Video encoding using modern codecs is usually CPU dependent, so do it on the fastest, multicore-est () CPU you have access to.
