Default Battery Life with 10.5.6 - 12-29-2008, 07:05 AM

I installed OSX for the first time with Type11's v.7b2 and updated to 10.5.6. The install went well except for not having sleep when I close the lid, but now I noticed something else...

Is it my imagination or is the battery life not as good anymore? Perhaps I messed up the install and it missed some kind of .kext? I feel like the battery life runs down pretty quickly lately. IIRC, at 99% battery life the estimated time of use is 2:45 minutes, which I'm pretty sure was down from what I originally got on ubuntu 8.10. I know that the amount of battery life is directly related to what I'm doing, but I can't help get teh feeling something is off.

Is it my imagination or is there some way I can check everything was installed right? --Thanks

From my understanding OSX bases your battery life on past run-downs... So you might have to completely dischargee your battery a couple times before that's accurate. (Correct me if I'm wrong) With that said, I noticed the same time on mine...

What you said about battery calibration is true.

HOWEVER, I have taken a kill-a-watt to my Dell mini9 sans battery, and ran OSX and XP Pro, at idle, OSX is drawing 11W and XP is drawing 9W. Under load they were drawing about the same (13-14W). I tested a bunch of other areas of performance too (H.264 decode, youtube, office, etc) and found that XP used a little less power than OSX. Of course, its possible OSX was doing some background task at the time (spotlight indexing), but I haven't double checked since I wiped it and put XP on it for some other benchmarks.

I haven't had time to do battery rundown tests (and wont until the week of Jan 5 after I'm back from vacation) to confirm that the mini is using more power under OS X than XP. But it might be something you want to check out. Just leave XP and OSX idle and see how long it takes the battery to run out from 100% charge (use a tool to determine the battery charge in Wh, not just by what the OS says).

Fully charged I'm getting about 2:56 on a custom setting where my machine never sleeps (monitor and computer) - battery has had about 7 cycles and no calibration.

when i am running mine OS X always predicts far less battery life than I am actually getting. This is because the BIOS feeds one number to OS X. It feeds an arbitrary mA draw on the battery that in reality fluctuates based on load, and on a real mac is always reported in real time. on the Dell, OS X just gets one number. so no matter how hard or soft you push the Mini, it will always read the same time remaining per % of battery charge remaining.

I found with the screen dimmed and just browsing the net my dell lasts about 4 hours... although I have not tested with 10.5.6
