Default real mac question - 03-01-2010, 07:50 PM

Ok, I upgraded to a real macbook It comes with 10.5 lepord installed. But only came with 10.4.8 install disk. My question is can I use the same 10.5 OSX image that I used to install my mini 9 to install on my new mac? Any help would be appreciated.

I wouldn't. In fact, best would be to buy Snow Leopard DVD for $29 from Apple.

Install disks are machine specific (machine generation) in Mac. If you have to reinstall the system, from scratch, you will need to start with that install disk and work foward. You can't use a IMAC install disk on a MacBook and vice versa.

Not exactly. You can buy a Snow Leopard DVD in any Apple store and install it on *any* Intel Mac (but not on an older Power PC Mac .. but there are no Power PC MacBooks)

The disc you used to install OSX onto your Mini would work, but it has to be the original version and not NBI-ed. This is because to install onto your Mini, you had to have had a non-system specific disc.

I would recommend just buying the SL disc from Apple for $29 just to be up to date.

Snow Leopard is a GREAT deal for the money.
I gained 13.6 gig of space on my MacBook after install

Some of that is real (fewer things you don't need installed). But some is because Apple decided to change the way they compute Gigabytes and such: Snow Leopard: The new one gigabyte, now slimmer than before

Well, it worked! Heres what I used. retail OS X 10.5.6 dvd iso mounted with transmac to a usb external drive. Power up holding C. Thats it. I just got this macbook refurbished and it had a brand new instal with iLife 08 taking up a total of 18gig! Thats why I wanted to do the fresh instal without ilife 08. My new install only took 8gig. Thnk you guys for your help
