Default Dell 5530 OS X set up - 12-25-2008, 08:08 PM

After lots of messing and googling I stumbled across this - cant find another ref on the site so I though I would post it. Works well - posting from my Vodafone connection now.

Its about 3/4's of the way down the page.

Mods please could you move to the faq's section?

The only useful information on that page is about the WWAN module. I would recommend the Type11 method over the MSIWind version due to the ability to use the normal software updates.

Yeah, the MSI Wind method is about the worst possible way to put OSX on the Mini9, and I want it to be VERY clear that you will get NO support here if you go that route. Maybe someone will write a guide for the WWAN that we can put in our how-to section, but I'm not going to put that one in, sorry.

Maybe I wasnt clear - the only piece that you need to follow is the quoted bit. The MSIWind stuff is irrelevant. The author should get credit for the Profile which I why I posted a link rather than copy/pasting the instructions.

Mobile Broadband (HSDPA / WWAN) Module

It took bloody hours to figure out how to get the module working, but in the end it turned out to be quite easy. The drivers for the modem are contained in the OS, you just need a script to get it working. I downloaded Ross‘ generic HSDPA modem script and made a couple of tweaks. I increased the serial speed to 7.2Mbps and added the magic AT command: AT+CFUN=1 - this turns on the radio in the modem. You can grab my Dell HSDPA modem script herehttp://www.mobilebroadbandrocks.com/...-broadband.zip.

* Unzip the script and place it in your root:library:modem scripts folder.
* Go into system preferences and select Network
* Select ‘Dell Wireless 5530 HSPA Mobile’ from the list on the left
* Click on advanced
* Under the modem tab, change the vendor to ‘other’ and select ‘Dell Mobile Broadband’ from the list, click on ok
* Back on the network screen, enter ‘none’ as the telephone number. This means the modem script will use the default APN. If you want to specify the APN you want to use, enter it in the telephone number field (e.g. ‘internet’). Leave account name and password blank.
* Select ’show modem status in menu bar’
* Click on apply
* When you want to connect, click on the phone icon on the top menu bar, near the time. Click on ‘Connect Dell Wireless 5530 HSPA Mobile’ and you’re away.

Does yours show two Dell Wireless 5530 HSPA Mobile in your list of network interfaces?

I just tried this, interestingly I have two Dell Wireless 5530 HSPA Mobile devices listed under Network.

With my Vodafone SIM in, It starts connecting, changes to authenticating and then drops back to disconnecting followed by an error:

"Internet Connect
Could not negotiate a connection with the remote PPP server. Please verify your settings and try again."

The SIM is a good Vodafone SIM with a data tariff. If I put it into a Mini running XP then it connects perfectly.

/edit - If I change the number from 'none' to 'internet' it connects. I'd still rather have only one device listed though, is there a way to get rid of the other one?

/edit2 - Just highlighted the second one and clicked on the - sign at the bottom to remove it. I do get cellular networking interference sounds through the speakers when I'm connected but that's a small price to pay for having a working connection when I'm out and about. Muting the sound hides it.

Hi everyone, I'm the author of that post on mobilebroadbandrocks.com

I've just turned it into a mini faq on this forum - http://mydellmini.com/forum/howto-us...st=0&sk=t&sd=a

I've added details on what to do if it fails to connect - i.e. specifying the APN manually.

This will work independently of chosen install method. FYI - I followed the Wind route as it was well before the type11 method appeared...

Default Cant find Dell Wireless 5530 HSPA Mobile under network - 02-16-2010, 09:32 PM

Anyone having problems where you cant see the network interface for "Dell Wireless 5530 HSPA Mobile"
I am 100% sure I have the hardware installed as it worked with Windows XP and also with Ubuntu, but not found under OSX.

I even took it out and put it back in to see if it connects after many reboots.

I have also reinstalled OSX many times to see that helps.

But still nothing.

Only have Airport, Bluetooth and Ethernet.

Can anyone help with this please.

Thanks
