Default noowners on a mount - 02-09-2010, 03:31 PM

I followed the instructions provided here Mounting a SDHC card to /Users via fstab roughly to move /Developer and /Applications off my SSD to my SDHC. All is basically well except permissions on apps in /Applications don't work. If I issue the mount command it informs me my SDHC card is nosuid and noowners.

Anyone know how to get those options off?

I've asked at the apple forums too but had to be a bit more vague.

Since this is working for others, I'm wondering if you did not do the copy correctly? Without sudo? A "straight" copy would explain setuid bits being dropped. But does not explain "noowner".

One thing to maybe try: Do a permissions fix via Disk Utility on the main drive before doing a new copy?

The behavior makes sense to me in that it's moveable media, so, having the drive mount with noowner/nosuid (ie. take owner ID of person accessing disk) makes sense.

After typing this, this sounds like a repair permissions issue. I know I've seen this on my Mini while pushing around files, removing, replacing, etc. in the more "important" places of the system.

The noowners I fixed on the Get Info for the disk. The no suid isn't on individual files it's on the entire mount.

I did a Check Permissions first thing, that's what high lighted the issue because it reported permission issues but was unable to fix them.

At least one person on the Apple forums claims I'm screwed on the nosuid issue:

I can see that, otherwise, one could write a simple setuid=root program that spawns shells/commands like sudo without having prompting for an admin password. You now have root access to any Mac via a flash drive.

Most of my issues were solved by toggling "Ignore ownership on this volume" on the Get Info panel of the mounted drive. Repair Permissions is still not happy with the /Applications mount, I think due to the nosuid. But at this point Dropbox stopped prompting for password at each startup and that was the symptom that got me annoyed so....
